Advantages: Different, funny and well acted
Disadvantages: De Niro can't cry to save his life !
Strange one this, a De Niro comedy ?? Well it works for me. When the biggest gangster around develops feelings, his men find him help in the form of shrink Billy Crystal. Reluctantly he takes on the case and tries to help the mobster, Paul Vidi, through his emotional turmoil, whilst at the same time focusing on his marriage to his fiance (Lisa Kudrow) The film is full of mob humour and lots of little anecdotes, and there is a startling comedy performance from Robert De Niro (who i thought would have struggled to pull it off) His portrayal of a gangster developing a conscience is, along with Crystals as usual excellence, what carries this movie through. Kudrow is annoying though, as she simply reprises her role as Phoebe from friends, and is given little room to be anything else. Also excellent is Vidi's sidekick Jelly, whose smart words and terrific presence give help to the leads, particularly in the films cracking finale. There are a few glitches, but these are easily overlooked as the film is so enjoyable.
