Anastasia (DVD) ... Ryan, John Cusack ... / DVD released 19 February, 2002 at 20th Century Fox / Features of the DVD: Animated, Colour, DVD-Video, Letterboxed, NTSC, Widescreen / Stomping out their usual cuteness and carbon copying Disney's grand animation style to a tee, directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (An American Tail) create a successful musical comedy from the story of the lost Russian princess. Adapting the story of imperialism and revolution is tricky, and subsequently the film's opening is weak. Once Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan, sung by Liz Callaway) is a teenager and on her own (suffering from some degree of amnesia), Anastasia is quite pleasing though never refreshingly new. 20th Century Fox's big-money gamble to horn in on Disney's realm is worthy. The songs, especially the recurrent "Once Upon a December" by Broadway team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, are better than Disney's recent efforts. It's worth picking up the soundtrack. The mix of cell animation and computer work is vivid. The collection of vocal talent is also strong, from John Cusack (as Dimitri, who wants to earn the reward by bringing Anya to Paris) to Hank Azaria as an amusing albino bat. Kelsey Grammer helps turn a roly-poly sidekick into a warm and strong supporting character. The biggest drawback is Bluth/Goldman's insistence on having a typical villain. Surprisingly, the story would be strong enough without one and the undead corpse of Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd) is unneeded and unoriginal. --Doug Thomas

... rivals, but I can easily say that this movie can equal to any Disney blockbusters ever made. I also noted that this movie holds a lot more serious thematic features than Disney productions. Anastasia is more a tale of family love and courage, rather than the typical Princess-meets-Prince-Charming happily ever after. My favorite element in the movie is the hope and longing that Anastasia has to meet at least part of the family. In addition, I also loved the particular aspect of a princess living as any commoner for ye...more

Premium Review Anastasia (DVD): The Fall of the Russian Family (800 words)
by - written on 25/07/09 (Very useful, 46 readings)
Rating:

Anastasia is undoubtedly the most different animated movie plot and animated female protagonist I ever saw. I thought Mulan was different from the rest of the clichéd stories and Princesses, but that was until I watched Anastasia! It is a wonderful tale of courage, love and family ties. In pure animated tradition, the film rotates around the life of the main female protagonist and helps her on the road towards self-discovery. I particularly enjoyed this movie because of the thematic features and the extraordinary songs, as well as the wonderful and un-Disney characters included in the film. The plot is based upon the legendary real-life Russian ...  Read the complete review

I brought this film recently as I remembered liking it when I was a lot younger, and as I still love my Disney movies, I gave it a go. Created with a mix of stunning 2D and 3D animation, the film attempts to solve the mystery of Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the Tsar, lost during the siege of the palace during the Russian Revolution. Ten years later, Anya (suffering from amnesia) teams up with a pair of conmen and begins making her way to Paris, to the dismay of the dead and decaying Rasputin, who, with the help of the dark arts, sets out to destroy Anastasia and the Romanov line forever. Visually beautiful and constantly moving, the only thing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Anastasia (DVD): Never mind the truth ... (706 words)

Rating:

First of all, it needs to be said that I enjoyed this film and own it. My eldest daughter loves it and watches it repeatedly. It's beautifully crafted, the animation is seamless and realistic and the songs, although very Disney, are very memorable and singalong. The lead character is a strong, independent female, the goodie, who is almost led astray by some naughty men. In that respect it's a good example. In other respects ... who cares about the truth? Historical fact: Anastasia was the youngest daughter of the Tsar of Russia. She was murdered along with the rest of her family. She was 17 at the time, her brother was 15, her sisters were ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Once upon a December (350 words)
by - written on 14/08/01 (Very useful, 347 readings)
Rating:

Disney probably weren't worried when they heard the 20th Century Fox were going to release a musical animation - now they have seen the finished article I bet they are quaking in their boots! Disney, the undisputed rulers of animation, have competition in the form of the animated hit from 20th Century Fox. Although not completely factual, the story is based on the legend of Anastasia, the only daughter of the Tsar of Russia thought to survive the complete annihilation of the Russian Royal family during the Russian Revolution. Anya is am 18year old orphan, who when old enough to leave the orphanage, sets of to find her long lost family. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Anastasia (DVD): A thrilling story (296 words)

Rating:

Set at the start of the 20th century, in Russia, the main character is 18-year-old Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan), an orphan, whose first eight years of her life are a mystery to her. The only clue she has to her past is a locket with the words ‘Together in Paris’ engraved upon it. So, naturally when she leaves the orphanage she wants to go to Paris to find her family. Meanwhile, in St. Petersburg there is a rumour going round that the little Princess Anastasia, who was presumed dead after the Russian Revolution, may actually be alive, and her Grandmother (Angela Lansbury) will reward anyone who can find her. So, having discovered she has a ...  Read the complete review
