Angel Eyes

In her latest on-screen role, Jennifer Lopez is a tough cop from Chicago names Sharon Pogue. In what must be about her hundredth film this year alone (ok, maybe not) she really des seem to be everywhere at the moment, be it singing, acting, you name it! However, few would argue that she is talented at both, and this is another example of her fine acting capabilities.

Sharon has no family, no prospects and basically no life, and the time has come and hit her hard in the face where she realises so. She, and the people around her constantly dwell on the negative and things really are starting to get her down, with a notable example of this being the fact that people only ever ask if she has killed someone as opposed to if she has saved.
However, Pogue is a good cop, and many a person she has saved. One of whom has returned back into her life by the name of Catch played by Jim Caviezel. Catch has very little recollection of his life prior to Sharon saving his life in a wreckage, and soon finds himself simply gawping at Pogue wondering where he has seen her before. In a shrewd twist of fate, Pogue now finds herself with a gun to her head, fearing for her life, and who comes to the rescue and saves her? Yep ? you guessed it...Hardly mastermind is it?

And it is from this point on that the film falls flat on its face and starts to disspoint. They are brought together from there: he, whose life has become merely a day-to-day walk through the city, has found a kindred soul; she has someone that she can confide in. But everything, of course, cannot remain rosy; several contrivances later, they are off-and-on lovers, though she still has learned nothing of his past.

Rapidly becoming a mish-mash of genres, floating between a thriller, romantic, drama and bordering on a few others, Angel Eyes seems to completely lose the plot and change its hand entirely. As the film went on, the less I liked it and the less convincing
and believable it gets!

While director Luis Mandoki does a decent enough job, the film does tend to divert quite a way of track and the film often becomes almost laughable. There is little tension of conviction between the front two. Lopez does an amicable job (although one gets the impression she was hired for this film mainly to allow a rather out of place steamy sex scene about two-third through the film!) and Jim Caviezel tried hard yet ultimately fails, quite in keeping with the whole film really.

As one of the most out of place films I have seen for quite some time, it is always bordering on interesting, although never reaching the point of becoming remotely interesting. What makes it worse, s that the film does exactly the opposite to what and good movie should ? and that is the fact it gets much worse as the film goes on. Angel Eyes is a film that *could* have worked, but certainly does not.
