Advantages: Scenes of Rome, adventure
Disadvantages: None
Angels and Demons is a 2009 movie based on the book of the same name by Dan Brown. It is the sequel to The Da Vinci Code. It again featured Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon.
The story really focuses on the age old discussion of science versus the church and which is right and the scandals surrounding that quest for truth. A vial on antimatter is stolen from a Nuclear Research facility. At the same time, the world is mourning the loss of the Pope in the Vatican but all is not as it seems. It turns out that a secret organistaion, Illuminati might be behind his death as well as the abduction of the four most likely members to succeed him. Robert and the local police have to deal with all the secrets inside. It seems that the Illumanti are killing the successors atht eh four pillars of Illumination and Robert must work out what these are and try and stop the killings.
The story is not as shocking as the Da Vinci Code was. I think that story uncovered a lot of secrets and interesting facts where as I think this movie did not expose as many explosive themes although the plot to kill the Pope is quite shocking in itself it was probably the only real shock of the movie.
I also thought that this movie did not go into the story as much as it could like it did in the Da Vinci Code. In that movie Robert seems to need to delve more and uncover things but in Angels and Demons he comes to a decision very quickly each time about where they need to go to find the next clue. I would have liked a bit more background detective work.
What I liked about this movie was the location of the filming, a lot of it done in Rome which is a really beautiful city. THe film goes to a lot of the famous locations and explains the meaning of a lot of the architecture there and meaning of certain aspects which was great. You also get to see a lot of the working of the Catholic church and I definitely learned a lot more about how a new Pope is chosen and all the ceremony and history surrounding that event which I think was really interesting.
Tom Hanks was good again in this movie and I think he definitely upped his stunt work as well as he seemed to be in a bit better shape than he was for the Da Vinci Code and also a bit more wise as to the working of a police investigation, ie not as naive as he was before too. He still plays a very intelligent character and I think that is nice to see for an action type of movie.
The film does differ from the book in a few aspects but I am not going to give anything away, you will just have to watch the film.

- 16/06/09 I thought this was awful and so full of holes you would have thought that Al Capone had turned a machine gun on it! |
