Advantages: Would be ok if you had not read the book
Disadvantages: Bit slow
For me the book of the same name was spoiled by an ending that was far too fanciful and unbelieveable butthe rest of the plot was entertaining however knowing the ending did not put me off going to see the film however the film was let down as it was just a bit too boring and what worked quite well on the written page was not translated onto the big screen.
Tom Hanks revives his role as Harvard professor Robert Langdon however in time lines Angels and Demons takes place before the Da Vinci Code. The film centres on the kidnap of four cardinals in the Catholic Church, all of whome were potential future Popes, and Langdon becomes involved in the attempts to trace and rescue them.
At the centre of his investigations is the huge research centre of CERN hich is about to activate the technology to smash atoms together and recreate the moment that the universe started, obviously this mirrors real life events in Switzerland that were in the news last year.
For me the movie did not move at a fast enough pace, having read the book is definately a disadvantage when you watch this film in my opinion as there can be no major surprises and hence any plot twists are fully expected. There have been some plot changes hoever I do not feel that these are really enough to make the film one that I would recommend, at best it is an average action suspense film and nothing more.
Both Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor are good in their respective roles and lend the film a certain air of quality however I was not convinced by Hanks in the first outing as Langdon mainly because he is too far removed from the mental picture Ibuilt up of him after reading the books.
Maybe ifI had not read the book I would have enjoyed it more but I definately will not bother to watch it again when it is on TV.
Summary: Action film
