Advantages: THE SETTING
Disadvantages: SOME FLAWS IN PLOT
Ron Howard directs this drama movie adapted from Dan Brown's novel of the same title ANGELS AND DEMONS.
Following up from The Da Vinci Code Tom Hanks returns to play Robert Langdon. The plot focuses on the death of the Pope under suspicious circumstances that leaves Rome in shock. When four cardinals are then kidnapped Langdon is called upon to hunt the capturers down.
It is soon discovered that the kidnappers are a group called the Illuminati a secret society with strong connections to the Catholic Church.
Langdon is joined by Vittoria played by Ayelet Zurer a scientist who co created a substance called anti-mattert he same substance the Illuminati have threatened to blow the Vatican up with.
Ewan McGregor plays the deceased Pope's Camerlengo who helps though has to be persuaded by Langdon to give him full access to Vatican secrets. From here the film focuses on whether the Illuminati can be stopped with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
The premise is good and the action is constant throughout. The film can have too many religious references that get confusing and there are a few far fetched flaws in the plot. The action scenes are particularly good with lots of fast paced stunts. The use of terroists in this flm was more plausible than some other movies I've seen.
Hanks is steady as Langdon showing that the character has an adventurous side to go with his intelligence. Zurer is okay as Vittoria and adds some glamour to procedings. McGregor's performance was very dodgy and his accent left a lot to be desired. The rest of the cast were good.
The setting is immense. Rome is shot in all it's glory with the exquisite buildings and ancientness that it possesses. The ending wasn't believable though decent.
The DVD extras include Browns inspriration for Langdon, commentary and behind the secenes material plus a lot more.
With a 12a viewing certificate, lasting over 2 hours and avaliable from AMAZON at £9.98 this is a perfectly good watch.
Summary: ANGELS MORE THAN DEMONS!
