Advantages: Exciting plot with an interesting back drop on the Catholic Church
Disadvantages: Parts of plot not completely developed and somewhat unbelieveable
I was looking forward to seeing this film having read and enjoyed the book. I felt that the film generally stuck fairly closely to the book and the casting was actually quite good contrary to what critics have said.
If you don't know the story of Angels and Demons here is a brief synopsis: Harvard professor Robert Langdon recieves a call from Vatican asking him to come to the city due to a matter of great importance. This corresponds with the death of the Pope and the rise of an age old anti Catholic group the Illuminati. The Illuminati have made threats that they will carry out terrorist activity against the Catholic church unless they adhere to their demands.
With the shock and confusion at the death of the Pope the church us slightly in disarray but manages to call a conclave to count the votes for a new Pope. However when the favourites for the post are all kidnapped and threats posted through the church that one will die on the hour every hour from a pre set time, Langdon has to work very quickly to work out a whole series of clues leading to the location that these killings may be in order to prevent them.
Although I will admit that there are holes in the plot this doesn't take away that this is an exciting thriller which though speeded up and shortened down (as it needed to be) for film is a very good watch.
I think Tom Hanks does well in his role as Langdon, he gives a solid performance as the middle aged professor. There are credible performances from Ewan McGregor, Ayelet Zurer and I feel particularly Stellan Skarsgard who is very convincing as the head of the Swiss guard. In the book it is not evident if he is helping the Illuminati infiltrate the church or not and this is clear in the film through a very good performance which keeps you guessing.
I have neglected to go too far into the plot and reveal the major twist so that the story will not be spoilt for anyone that watches the film. If you haven't read the book or indeed seen the film I would certainly recommend both. Yes, there are holes in the plot but ulimately it is a very interesting and well thought through storyline which I found very exciting.
Summary: Well worth watching
