Advantages: Funny animal facts
Disadvantages: Some jokes too crude
Ricky Gervais' first ever stand-up is relatively enjoyable. Gervais' stand-up is presented in the style of a lecture with a alcoholic beverage by his side. Gervais covers a range of subjects from the animal world most of them amusing.
The highlight for me comes towards the end of the show when he gives a list of animal facts he found on the internet. Some of these are hillarious and the way Gervais acts out scenes as though he were the animals in these situations is quite hillarious. An example of this is that polar bears cover their noses so they become invisible and can kill their unsuspected prey. Consequently the DVD is not just funny, but educational as well.
I also enjoyed Gervais reading the opening from the Bible as he mocks how God created the world. His best line being, "And God said let their be light and their was light...what a genius he already knew what light was!" Gervais does well at making the most religious person question the legitimacy of the Bible. He also has a funny story of his friend and drunk crabs.
Nonetheless Gervais can be rather crude. He goes into detail about animal sex that can be a bit uncomfortable, although the explanation of whale sex is hillarious. There are some stories that do go over the line though particularly a story about a friend and a bluebottle that's bit disgusting.
The extras are not worth the money as it just includes a documentary.
Overall, not a bad first stand-up by Gervais.
Summary: A good first stand-up by Gervais
