Advantages: light and girly, for the younger mermaids
Disadvantages: light and girly, im not a mermaid and never will be
Dont you just hate how the supermarkets place cheap DVD's or bargain items next to the tils? On my last few trips through the tils at Asda Id seen this film and decided not to buy it as I was trying to act my age for a change, sadly on my way home from work on Friday night I finally broke and this DVD made its way from the shelf in to my shopping basket so for a whole £5 I obtained a shiney new film to soothe my obessive nature.
Aquamarine is the story of three girls, one a mermaid washed ashore in a storm and two 'human' friends who are enjoying the last summer they'll have together as one is about to move out of America with her marine biologist mum.
Aquamarine as the mermaid is called doesnt want to return to the sea as she has seen and fallen for the local lifeguard and her father wants her to marry a merman she doesnt love. She wants Claire and Hailey to help her to get him to fall for her. In return for the wish they get for helping a mermaid. They intend to use the wish to stop Haileys mum from moving the family to Australia, but will they get Raymond to tell Aqua he loves her or will she have to return to the sea for her wedding?
As paper thin as the plot is and as bad as the acting was in places for a film which simply doesnt have the maturity to be classed as a chick flick (think on the same sort of level as the Olsen twins films) it is a pleasant enough way to spend and evening over a drink with the girls since you can dip in and out without ever risking losing track of the plot, and chances are girls who enjoy the Little Mermaid might also enjoy this.
Although most of the actors in the film arent big names, in fact I spent alot of the film trying to remember which Australian soaps most had been in, and the biggest name in it is best known as a singer (JoJo) who has had a few hits in the UK but is by no means a 'star'. Thankfully the producers of the film resisted the urge to fill the sounds track with JoJo's songs instead choosing to use poppy songs from a range of artists known in the UK, Australia and the US.
The standard type extras are inclided on the disc, deleted scenes, on set interviews, a feature on the auditions and a directors introduction none of which really add anything to the package but might interest younger viewers.
Rated PG, and costing only £5 I didnt expect much from this film but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed watching it while I tidied out my wardrobes, as well as to learn more about what mermaids are really like, after all we should all know that a seashell is a mermaids version of a mobile phone or that star fish are very complimentary creatures shouldnt we?
Now where's my starfish to tell me how great I am......
Summary: Weak plot and so so acting but worth a punt maybe
