Armageddon (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 05 January, 1999 at Walt Disney Video / Features of the DVD: AC-3, Closed-captioned, Colour, DVD-Video, Letterboxed, Widescreen, NTSC / This 1998 testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continued Hollywood's millennium-fuelled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understand what mainstream audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but, of course, lovable) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishising of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also try to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable to populate the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humour and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable female characters--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'". Sadly, she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than all the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

Another good thing about it is the themes examined, namely parental love and passionate love. The 'girl growing up and not being daddy's any more' element is really important in this film, and I kind of liked the tug between parent and lover in the movie. The sci-fi element is exciting and adds the adventure to the plot - going into ...more

Premium Review Armageddon (DVD): End of the World (1308 words)

This next review is on a Bruce Willis action film, and before you ask it's not Die Hard. I suppose when most people think of Bruce, they always think about the Die Hard film, but for me he has made some really good action films, one of which happens to be Armageddon. Directed by Michael Bay, with an all star cast, this film was released in 1998, and became a huge blockbuster hit. Now the reason I liked this film was because it took a commonly used scenario of an Asteroid hitting earth, but it made it more real life, they made it more exciting and it was so different to other films like Deep Impact, which too me was a huge flop. This film had everything, a great director, ...  Read the complete review

>>>> Synopsis When a huge meteor the size of Texas is spotted in the night skies heading our way, spelling out impending doom for the whole world, the brains at NASA come up with a solution to save the day. Employing the services of the world’s best deep driller, Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his team of men, they put them through a crash course in becoming astronauts in the hope of firing them into space where they will land on the meteor, drill a huge hole and plant a nuclear bomb. >>>> Opinion For some reason there has been a trend in cinema for many years to launch a big blockbuster film where the ...  Read the complete review

Armageddon is a science fiction/ action film that was released in 1998. It is rated 12 due to brief bad language, some violence and some minor sexual references. The film is 150 minutes long but the director's cut is 153 minutes long. Plot After several meteoroids come down on New York City, NASA discover that a huge asteroid is heading straight for Earth and they have to come up with a way to stop it. It will hit in 18 days and they decide that the only way to stop it, is to set off a nuclear bomb under it's surface so it will split in two and both parts will end up missing Earth. Harry Stamper is the best oil driller in the world and NASA ...  Read the complete review

This is not just a Sci-Fi movie, it crosses into a multi genre epic that I like to call Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Action, Thriller, Adventure film. Produced and directed by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay in 1998 this film is now eleven years old and holds all the cinematic qualities of film made last week, the dramatic Asteroid setting and incredibly intense special effects will have your heart racing and the edge of you seat becoming the more favorable viewing position. The premise of this classic in the making is a team of "rough neck" oil rigger are selected to drill an 800 foot hole in an asteroid the size of Texas that's hurtling towards ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Armageddon (DVD): Cheesy, adrenaline fuelled geology based action romance (702 words)

Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay produced this storming special effects laden film about a giant meteor heading to earth, it has the hallmarks of both, huge budgets, loads of special effects, poorly drawn out characters and a plot that pulls all the right strings in keeping you watching with romance, rivalry, love and loss, in short it's a big budget film that is pretty enjoyable. The Plot: A giant meteor is heading to earth, for some reason which still doesn't entirely make sense to me, the only way we can stop this happening is by sending a crew of deep sea drillers into space to plant explosives in the meteors core and blow it up.
