Advantages: Bruce Willis - duh!, good CGI
Disadvantages: Liv Tyler looking all doughy eyed
Being a huge Bruce fan (no!) and enjoying Sci-fi films, my expectations were very high, and even though this film had been over-hyped somewhat, and with Deep Impact coming out in the same year it didn’t fail to impress me. With Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler (Steve Tyler from Aerosmiths’ daughter) and a few others I knew it was going to be a corker, or should I say a ‘big hit’ – ha! ****Spoiler Alert**** Ok, America saves the world again…. The story centers on a massive asteroid heading directly towards our planet, collision means total annihilation of everything (yes, including cyberspace). A team of experts (from NASA) decides to hire oil diggers to solve the problem. All they have to do is place a nuclear depth charge into the center of the asteroid and split it apart so the pieces go either side of earth. Of course, that’s exactly what I would have done! In walks Harry (Bruce), A.J. (Ben) and Rockhound (Steve Buscemi) on a mission to save the planet – sigh… ok, the plot is pretty pathetic when you look at it like that, but honest guv, it’s a good film! The love interest is between AJ and Grace (Liv Tyler) (just watch out for the animal crackers!). It really is an all round action film in space, the effects are breathtaking, although they can be a little long winded, there are lots of cliches like “not everyone is going to return from the mission”, or “I Love you” (just before AJ gets into the space shuttle). But for the first 15 minutes a stunning meteor shower splits the Empire State Building in half and basically rips the heck out of every major City in the world, the MIR station explodes as well (well, it’s cheaper than repairing it all the time!). The acting isn’t bad either; Bruce is good at being, well Bruce. Ben Affleck is rather cute as his sidekick. Liv Tyler is there to look pretty (which she
does very well), but Steve Buscemi has the funniest line in this movie (I’ll let you watch it to work out which one it is) and with his strange looks and brilliant wise-cracking, he’s so incredibly right for this character. Billy Bob Thornton is excellent as the NASA chief as well. Well, definitely better than ‘The Rock’ or ‘Con Air’, just don’t go looking for a science lesson when you watch it. It’s been rated PG, but I wouldn’t want anyone under 15 to watch it. But that might be me being over protective. I think it rocks - actually, lots of rocks.
