Advantages: Funny, Great lines from Ash, The extras

Disadvantages: Not for everyone, If you're looking for pure horror, don't watch this

This review is for the DVD of the movie and placed here as there is no DVD section for the horror-comedy (or comedy-horror) that is "Army Of Darkness".

Ash (Bruce Campbell) stands in a dusty castle courtyard surrounded by knights and peasants, brandishing a shotgun. "All right, you primitive screwheads, listen up," he bellows. "This is my boom stick!" Did you smirk at that? If not, then forget watching "Army Of Darkness", Sam Raimi's third "Evil Dead" instalment.

Best described as "Jason And The Argonauts" as performed by the Three Stooges, it's an uneven caper that plants Campbell's deadite-bashing shop assistant in the 13th century. The humour's broad and the effects are primitive, but taken with a couple of tinnies it's top late-night entertainment.

This two-discer includes Raimi's original 96-minute version, alongside the 81-minute theatrical release. The latter's pacier (obviously), but the director's cut has a superior ending (casting Ash into the future), and it's this edition with Campbell, Raimi and his brother Ivan provide an amusing commentary over. The well-made "Men Behind The Army" effects featurette is quaint in the age of CGI, while deleted scenes, concept art and extensive storyboards mean "Evil Dead" geeks can go to their graves happy.
