Advantages: Period drama.Decent performances

Disadvantages: Editing,Too many songs. Weak beginning

Such a film based on a heroic emperor could have been a film to experience,a film which could have put light on his adventurous and controversial life. That could only have happened if it was in the right hands, and in this case it was not! When you read names like Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor you imagine something more commercial and less experimental. A film like this requires a lot of braveness which SRK tries to show by producing the film but the end product is disappointing!

The film puts light on Asoka's life, starting off with his disturbed childhood and then shifting focus to his youth. After watching another film of such a genre(Mongol) I guess Asoka felt short here, skipping his childhood only means that the film maker missed a solid foundation to the character. The song and dance sequences early in the film makes things worse as we are introduced to the fiery princess played by Kareena Kapoor. The sequences between SRK and Kareena give the audiences mixed feelings, few scenes look unnecessary while few stand out.

The film continues with a lot of war sequences and the rivalry between different regions heat up with Asoka gaining more power and territory under his belt. Personally,I feel that the ending was well done, though a few things seem too cliché. SRk tries to give an honest performance and it shows that he gives in a lot of effort.Kareena is a mixed bag, going over the top at certain points. The songs and dance routine is unnecessary and slows down the proceedings.

You'll be disappointed if you are expecting an epic!

Summary: A film on the legendary ruler which falls short!
