Advantages: atmospheric, a true action film, clever in its style

Disadvantages: little character development

John Carpenter's early effort sees a run down Police Station in an LA ghetto about to close and a newly promoted cop given his first assignment to supervise the closure.

Unfortunately, a father who has just killed a psyopathic gang member for shooting his daughter, also decides to take shelter there. In addition, a bus carrying prisoners doomed for death row also makes an unscheduled stop and before hellos have been exchanged all hell breaks loose as the revengeful gang members lay siege to the station.

The film then cranks up the action as siege after siege ensues leaving only the hero cop, a police secretary and a sympathetic prisoner to save the day.

Carpenter masterfully sets the tension using sparse electronic music, toned down lighting and minimal dialogue. It is a real movie buffs film peppered with references to other films and displaying a sense of self parody making it twenty years ahead of films such as Scream.
