Atlantis - The Lost Empire (DVD) ... Fox, Corey Burton ... / DVD released 04 March, 2002 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, PAL / The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blonde adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source--but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle. Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobites and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilisation at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs and pointed jaws. The result is a film that will appeal more to 10-year-old boys than to family audiences. --Charles Solomon, Amazon.com

... their usual very good job in both animation and vioce talent. All the characters voices were played excellently, I'd like to have had a bit more in the way of a better or more involved plot but the animation was very good indeed and generally was very enjoyable. The film seemed to run out of ideas a bit and I get the feeling they based Fox's character on Daniel Jackson from Stargate ( A misfit good at ancient languages). All the nice shiny crystals that make them live for thousands of years are clever and Leona...more

Premium Review Atlantis - The Lost Empire (DVD): Explore the depths with Disney (579 words)

Hey, I love Disney. Having children was a great event in my life. It meant I had an excuse for the cupboard full of Disney videos and I could watch cartoons at cinema without people thinking I was a weirdo. My second child was born last August, which meant I was a bit too busy to see this film on the big screen. Thus I was very keen to get it on video. Fortunately I had just accumulated enough 'ipoints' to get it free. (Isn't free a lovely word!) It arrived in the post early one Friday morning, my daughter tore the packaging off before I had chance and we decided to have a family night in with this new addition to our collection. So ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Disney meets Jules Verne meets Japanese cartoons??!! (1910 words)

Ever since I’ve had kids my trips to the cinema have almost entirely been limited to watching Disney films or other films of that genre. I’ve seen them all, ‘Mulan’, ‘Emperors New Groove’, ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and many, many more. On the whole nothing has ever come close to the last truly great animated film ‘The Lion King’. So it was with some trepidation that I agreed to take my two sons (8year old and 5year old) and their cousin (6year-old) to see the much-hyped new Disney animated film ‘Atlantis The Lost Empire’. My verdict…well let’s start at the beginning. *THE ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Atlantis - The Lost Empire (DVD): Disney meets Indiana Jones….. (897 words)

Half term is over and we all survived! Experience has taught me over the years that holidays go smoothly if enough is on offer for the children to do, so I’d planned a few trips dotted between the times left for them to entertain themselves. Now all three of my foster children love going to the cinema (inspite of one of them being profoundly deaf) so off we went to see Disney’s latest offering. Often I’ve heard so much about Disney films before I go to see them that I know what to expect but this time was different I didn’t know any one that had already seen it and I’d read nothing either. I looked specially here on ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Kids Loved It (466 words)

"Atlantis" deeply disappointed me. The story was lame, full of clichees, poorly executed, jammed with pseudo-esoteric humbug, and generally boring. We didn't have characters, not to mention any development- just clichees. The character animation was mediocre, to say the best. What was done with CGI was impressive, but much too short and poorly placed. Why one wastes an endless span with the (pretty pointless) exposition and the superfluent and absurd twist of Milo being kidnapped, then introduces the magnificent submarine and ditches it again just a minute later, to follow up with the endless and boring expedition, rather than exploiting the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Atlantis - The Lost Empire (DVD): I was lost with the Lost Empire (304 words)

Being a 'grown up' fan of Disney, i long awaited this film and so had many high expectations. I wasn't disappointed, but it's not the Disney classic you expect. I think we're seeing a new era of Disney films, concentrating less on the musical aspects that im sure everybody would agree are endeering and drawing closer to a more sophisticated story. We're seeing more of this with the Emperors New Groove and Treasure Planet also. Atlantis the Lost Empire i felt was a bit more gritty, with more history and fact yet still extremely fictitious. The main characters - Kida, the heir to the empire and Milo Thatch, an enthusiastic but ...  Read the complete review
