Advantages: Austin Power, Great Laugh, If your an Austin Powers fan you'll love it
Disadvantages: possibly the last one , If your not an Austin Powers fan stay away.
Austin Powers continues his world saving escapades in "Austin Powers in Goldmember" or, does he? The premise of Goldmember has Austin foiling the plans of Dr. Evil. or perhaps, it is Austin watching the film version of his story in Steven Speilberg's "AustinPussy". Quickly, if you haven't seen Goldmember, you must leave your computer now and go see it. There is a good reason why this film pulled in 75 million dollars on its opening weekend. It is hilarious. Austin Powers in Goldmember delivers all the humour the fans of the series have come to expect, and then some. In addition to what we've come to expect from our international man of mystery, we are treated with a bunch of great cameo appearances from the likes of: Tom Cruise, Gweneth Paltrow, Danny Devito, Britney Spears, Ozzy, and more. Once again, Dr. Evil has come up with a plan to destroy a large portion of the Earth unless he is given a huge sum of money. This time Dr. Evil is going to use a "tractor beam" to carry out his plans. As always, Dr. Evil's plan has a great name, which leads to comments from Scott Evil, and the father/son argument. Father and Son is a large theme in this movie. Scott and Dr. Evil begin bonding as Scott begins to become Evil. No longer the Diet Coke of Evil, just one calorie, not evil enough, Scott gives his father a gift, which fans will remember from Austin Powers, International Man Of Mystery, that Dr. Evil really wanted, yet didn't get. We see Scott as he begins to ascend to the right hand of Dr. Evil. We also see Austin's relationship with his father, played by Michael Caine. Austin feels something is missing from his life because during all-important events, his dad wasn't there. Which leads to the premise of the movie, Austin's father, kidnapped by Goldmember, and hidden in the year 1975 at Studio 69. (Yes, time travel has been perfected) Austin is sent b
ack in time to save his father, and equipped with a great pimpmobile Cadillac. At Studio 69 Austin meets up with FBI agent Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce) who Austin left behind apparently 8 years ago. Foxy is working undercover in Goldmember's Disco club, due to Goldmember's killing of her partner. The logistics of the Austin/Foxy relationship seem highly unusual at this point. If we are to believe they were romantically involved, and knowing that Beyonce is 20 years old, subtracting 8 years from 20 leaves us with...... Well now, Foxy Cleopatra simply must be older than Beyonce. Foxy and Austin team up to go after Goldmember who is working with Dr. Evil, and in their adventures, they run across Fat Bastard, who has become a sumo wrestler. Those who found Fat Bastard disgusting in The Spy Who Shagged Me, will not be let down, as he spends almost all his time on the screen with no shirt on. Goldmember is even more disgusting. Goldmember's skin peels off in scabby pieces. Let us leave it at that, and not spoil the surprises. Goldmember is Dutch, and speaks with a silly accent, leading to many of the characters not understanding exactly what he is saying, and this is well played for laughs. Goldmember had an unfortunate smelting accident, leading to exactly why he is called Goldmember. He is an incredibly silly character who likes to leave his calling card by painting certain body parts gold. Hearing him argue for being allowed to do this is great. Michael Caine, as Nigel Powers doesn't really add a single thing to Goldmember. He is just there for the storyline. Beyonce is under used. Even her Afro is under used, as she only pulls one item from her hair. It would seem the female partner role has been diminishing since Elizabeth Hurley was replaced with Heather Graham. But Beyonce does have some cool jewellery, and her own "SHAZAM" line. She could have been used more, and whatever they d
id with her outfit to make her boobs look so much bigger, was effective. Mike Myers as Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, Goldmember, Austin, shows he is an even more talented comedian than Eddie Murphy as half the cast of The Klumps. Vern Troyer as Mini Me, has a larger role in this film than previously. He also is used for a large number of physical jokes, and takes a tremendous beating, which is a really non-stop laugh. Dr. Evil and Mini Me in jail is perhaps the funniest movie moment of the year. Again performing a song, and parody of music videos, Dr. Evil and Mini Me dressed as, and acting like gang members, is well worth the price of admission on its own. Scott Evil, Seth Green begins to become evil and make his daddy proud. Scott has always been a great part of the series, and it was good to see him begin to want to take over the family evil empire and not open a petting zoo (not even an evil petting zoo). Frau Farbissina returns, and her dressed as the trailer park trash going to jail for the conjugal visit is disturbingly funny. Number 2 is, of course, the ever supportive Number 2. But was anything missing from Austin Powers in Goldmember? A little, yes. It seemed the sexual edge that Austin had in the previous films was toned down a bit. Perhaps Austin really hasn't gotten all his mojo back yet. Austin seems more focused on his mission than on shagging. Mr. Bigglesworth, we see a younger Mr. Bigglesworth but we don't see a current Mr. Bigglesworth. People do wonder if they will see the kitty. Of course the sexual humour and innuendo are there from the start of the film, till the end. Which leads me to say, no, you shouldn't be bringing the 5 and 9 year olds to this film! What were you thinking? If this really is the final film in the series, it is a sad time. But it is sure going out on top.
