Advantages: Rousing satire of the 60s

Austin Powers is a rousing spoof that was successful enough to have two sequels released, although this is the best of the bunch. The film spoofs the spy genre, particularly James Bond, making a mockery of the silliness of those films whilst also taking pot shots at the anachronism of the 1960s when compared with the present day.

The film opens in 1967 as International Superspy Austin Powers and his nemesis Dr. Evil (both Mike Myers) have been attempting to do away with one another for years. When Dr. Evil hatches a plan to kill Austin at a nightclub, Austin foils his plan, causing Dr. Evil to go into hiding, cryogenically freezing himself and blasting off into space. The film continues as Dr. Evil resurfaces in 1997, reuniting himself with his former evil teammates, Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling), Mustafa (Will Ferrell), and Number Two (Robert Wagner), as well as his bald cat, Mr. Bigglesworth. To combat this, the British Ministry of Defence unfreeze Powers, who volunteered to be frozen in case Dr. Evil ever returned, and they ask him to help combat Dr. Evil as he is most aware of how he operates.

He is brought back up to speed by Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley), an attractive young woman who Powers immediately tries to work his charms on, but of course, a lot has changed since the 1960s, and the role of women and notions of "free love" are very different. Much of the film's humour, in fact, comes from how literally stuck in the past he is - he hasn't yet been updated on changing social attitudes and even basic news such as the fact that the Cold War has ended.

A wildly original and hilarious romp that is filled with great gags and superb performances from all involved, namely Myers.

Summary: A daft and brilliant comedy
