The International Man of Mystery has arrived. Austin Powers is alive and well and not living in the 60's anymore, not that he would be aware of that though.

The Austin Powers movies are action comedy films which spoof themes and genres like James Bond. Austin Powers is a secret agent and in his day he was the sexiest, funniest man around but things are different in the 90's. What makes these films really funny in my opinion is that they make fun of the James Bond type secret agent, the suave, sophisticated male as Austin has really bad teeth and dress sense. He also makes extremely sexist comments to the females around him which was probably ok in the 60's but not nowadays. One of his favourite catch phrases in the movie is Do I make you horny? and he says this all the time throughout the film!!

Austin Powers International Man of Mystery was released in 1997 and was the first of the Austin Powers movies. Austin's arch enemy is Dr Evil and 30 years ago after a battle between the two Dr Evil was able to escape and then places himself in a cryogenic freezing chamber which he will come out of at some point in the future. In order to keep their battle alive Austin decided to freeze himself too. Dr Evil is a great character. What I find interesting is that Mike Myers plays both Austin and Dr Evil. I think Mike Myers plays them both brilliant. He apparently came up with the idea for Austin so it's really his brain child and he is so out of there and wacky/crazy that both the characters really work. It must have been quite fun playing both the fun/good character and the dark/evil one as you would assume a different persona for each role.

Once back and unfrozen in 1997 the battle between the two continues. Dr Evil is set upon world domination. What I like about this movie also is that it incorporates cultural elements from the 60's and 70's still. Austin is still running around in a velvet suit unaware of how things work in the 90's. For this he needs a side kick and of course what kind of assistant would a secret agent have but a beautiful sexy woman with whom he could flirt. The women in question is Vanessa Kensington played by Elizabeth Hurley. She is rather gorgeous and has a smoking hot body but I've never really been a fan of Elizabeth Hurley so I thought she did ok but it was not the most challenging role around. She just had to look good in a cat suit and pout a lot which she did well

Dr Evil also has problems adjusting to life in the 90's. One of my favourite lines in the movie is when Dr Evil is asking for a ransom of 1 million dollars thinking this is a lot of money and then finds out that things have gone up in the last 30 years!

You have to watch this movie with a funny persona and get into a lot of the jokes that are repeated quite a lot. The DVD contains several bonus features including seven deleted scenes, two alternative endings, cast biographies and "music to shag to."
