Autumn In New York (DVD) ... 03 December, 2001 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Autumn in New York is a by-the-numbers love story, right down to its opening shot of, yes, autumn in New York. Richard Gere stars as restaurateur/lady's man Will, while Winona Ryder plays the airy-fairy, oh-too-delicate-for-this-world Charlotte. Will is 48, Charlotte is 22, and it just keeps getting creepier: Will actually used to hang out with Charlotte's mom. She plays artily with beads and sparkly things, he notices how elfin and different she is (inspiring such stomach-churning dialogue as "I find you completely unprecedented and therefore utterly unpredictable"), and soon they're in love. Ah, but it's doomed: she has a tumor in her heart (just in case you missed the significance, Charlotte says "I'm sick in my heart"). Does Charlotte have enough time left to teach Will to truly love? While Gere does a stoic job, Ryder spends a lot of time being darling and winsome, aided by the fact that Charlotte has managed to catch one of those special movie diseases where you never look bad or get tubes stuck up your nose. Director Joan Chen doesn't have much of a script to work with, but at least she knows how to pick a cinematographer; the whole movie is shot in gorgeous autumnal colours. Several excellent supporting actors are trapped in this movie: Jill Hennessey and Anthony LaPaglia do their very best, but what can they do in the face of such a sweeping, creepy love? Autumn in New York is nothing if not an earnest movie, and it certainly means well. Much like Charlotte, it seems to cry, "Can you let me love you? Please?". The answer is an emphatic "No". --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

Premium Review Autumn In New York (DVD): Good Love Story (355 words)

This is a sweet love story that will touch your heart. It was not the best love story that I have ever seen, but it is definitely worth watching at least once. It was a little weird at first, seeing someone as old as Richard Gere, trying to pick up someone as young as Winona Ryder, but the love that is shared between them will touch your heart. The story is about Will Keane, played by Richard Gere, who is a man who loves his life as a bachelor. He is in his 50's, single, and has a boat load of money from the different restaurants that he owns. He enjoys seducing beautiful women and has trouble committing to a long term relationship. That is until he meets ...  Read the complete review

Take your tissues with you if you go to see this film. It ends up squeezing out every emotion you ever had. This romantic drama is all about a love affair that happens in New York. Chef, Will Keane, played by Richard Gere, doesn't believe in forever. He just wants to sow his oats today and off he goes. Things change! He meets an attractive young designer called Charlotte (Winona Ryder). She has been brought up by her bad tempered grandmother Dolly (Elaine Strich). hE'S 44 and she's 22 but they don't see a problem. However, just about everybody else does. Dolly is very wary of this arrangement. The pair of them carry on ...  Read the complete review

AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is directed by Joan Chen, who is better known in some circles as having played Josie Packard in David Lynch's surreal TV show TWIN PEAKS. I wasn't aware until now that she had ever done any directing herself. However, she has and the result is AUTUMN IN NEW YORK. The movie stars Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. Gere seems to me to always be playing characters who fall in love with women who are WAY too young for him (for example Julia Roberts in both PRETTY WOMAN and RUNAWAY BRIDE), and here he does the same - only this time it's Winona Ryder who he falls for (who is, in my opinion, by far a better actress than Roberts). I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest. However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who plays Ryder's grandmother. Set in New York (unsurprisingly given the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Autumn In New York (DVD): Not quite a box of tissues! (227 words)

This is a hearty film that although very bland is seamless enough to flow quite nicely from one scene to the next. The Womaniser (Richard Gere) is portrayed quite cleverly with screenplay that doesn’t try to go too deeply into philosophical, emotional nor sexual aspects. It’s a love story between a young girl and much older guy that brings home the reality of care that is all too essential and easily overlooked by many 'entertainment only' style movies. Although this film didn't 'move me to tears' it did succeed in provoking a kind of 'don't take this for granted' style thought, in a refreshing sense. ...  Read the complete review
