Advantages: kills an hour or so on a long haul flight

Disadvantages: there wasn't much choice of films on said long haul flight

I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest.

However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who plays Ryder's grandmother.

Set in New York (unsurprisingly given the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. He'd previously dated her late mother, and of course Granny (Strich) is less than happy when Gere starts pursuing Ryder. His reputation as a womanising self-centred restauranteur doesn't exactly make him family material, particularly when Ryder has a serious heart condition which means she'll be lucky to see out her twenties.

Of course there would be no film if the attraction weren't mutual and he pursues her, she gives in and they fall in love and well you can guess the rest since it's a tearjerker. Of course it's not as simple as that, there is about an hour plus to fill in after all, and the cinematography is great which is a bonus.

Frankly there's not a tremendous amount of chemistry between the two leads, and you just cannot quite believe what is happening between them. To be honest, if you want to watch a doomed love affair and terminal illness, watch Love Story it's far superior and will have you howling for hours.

I'm afraid the Gere/Ryder combo is enough to put me off already.
