Advantages: keeps you entertained and involved (especially in 3D)

Disadvantages: Some predictable parts

Well I heard nothing about this movie when it came out, I hadn't even seen a trailer for it, all I knew was what a friend of mine told me.
my friend works in editorial and he worked on a few of the scenes and what he saw he liked.
So when I saw it i absolutely loved it. I would definitely recommend it to everyone just because it's so different and it's original, not a remake of an old film or taken from a game.
I saw it in 3D and I saw it in normal 2D and it was only slightly better in 3D.

Plot

This film is set in the future in a place called Pandora where humans are trying to establish peaceful negotiations with the locals.
A Human corporation called the RDA are mining a mineral called unobtanium, and because the air here is toxic to humans they have to wear breathing masks whenever they venture outside into the atmosphere.

The locals are a very peaceful, blue skinned, 10-foot-tall in height humanoids Called Na'vi who are very spiritual and live in harmony with the forest, they hold a great respect for the mother goddess Eywa and there main home is a gigantic tree called Hometree. but the RDA Corporation as also been informed that there is the biggest depository of unobtanium under the tree.

To make relations easier with the Na'vi they grow Na'vi-Human hybrids called avatars that are connected and matched to one human so that when that human is (essentially) hooked up in a bed with all his nerves connected it allows you to see through the eyes of the avatar and becomes your second body to control while unconscious from your human body.

The RDA are desperate for this big depository of unobtanium and bring in a Former Marine called Jake Sully who is wheel chair bound to replace his twin brother (who died in a robbery) who was a scientist who was being trained to be linked with an avatar. But due to his untimely death they had to find a quick replacement and called his twin brother to come serve his people as he was the only one who could be linked to this avatar because of his jeans.
Which the RDA were happy about because now they can order him to do secret Reconnaissance without the knowledge of Dr. Grace Augustine head of the scientific department (dealing with the Human-Na'vi hybrids) interfering, and also with the promise that at the end of all this he will get his legs back. Soldiers know how to follow orders. Or do they.

When Sully is linked with his Avatar and gets over that he now has working able legs, he goes off on his first mission with Dr. Grace Augustine and gets lost due to stumbling into a wild beast, he has to spend the night in the forest and makes contact with the Na'vi.

He comes to understand that the big tree AKA " Hometree" is a connection of a neural network to which Pandoran organisms are connected but this fact is ignored by Parker Selfridge (who is head of the RDA Private Security Force known as Sec-Ops).

And as you can guess there are some trials he has to go through to be accepted by the Na'vi, there's love, there's betrayal, there's war then emerges a hero.

The film goes on so many twists and turns that your not too sure which way its going to go.
Now there are a few moments in the film that you know what that specific outcome will be and you would be correct......but I'm not going to ruin it and tell you those moments.

Now with the actors and the acting, there are no outstanding moments that is going to stay in your memory for years to come, or a specific line or phrase, no, what you have to notice that it is a film of two different cultures and worlds coming together and it's a fight for survival .

The film took 5 years to make from beginning to end and what is even more amazing is the avatars themselves were not graphed on real people, what I mean by that is usually to do an animated character realistically you get someone to wear a special suit and record there movements to the smallest detail, but with Avatar there was no such graphing. Which when you watch it you appreciate it even more how great it truly is because of the detail of the characters and I don't think that for even 1 second did any of it look like a cartoon.
Truly amazing.
