... to europe just before the due date of their child's birth. The not so young couple have a few options and the treatment of the film somehow invites the audience to accompany them through their journey. Its a journey you don't mind taking, mainly due to the presence of such interesting characters. The character of Verona's ex-boss is truly hilarious and depicts a dysfunctional family in a lighter mood. We are then introduced to a rather annoying Lily(played well by Maggie Gyllenhaal) and her mad theories about life...more

Crowned Review Away We Go (Blu-ray): Take a Pre-Parenthood Discovery Trip (1000 words)

(Film only review) When you hear that John Krasinski ("The Office (USA)") and Maya Rudolph (SNL) are the stars of the film Away We Go, you're naturally going to think this is intended to be a rip-roaring comedy. Then you'll see its directed by Sam Mendes (Oscar award winner for "American Beauty") and you'll realize that while this may have some comedy in it (and it certainly does), this isn't going to be one of those films that we can toss off as a lark like some crappy Apatow film. This is actually a fun, but touching story about Burt Farlander (Krasinski) and Verona De Tessant (Rudolph), a couple who are about to have a baby ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Another hit from Sam Mendes (302 words)
by - written on 13/10/09 (Very useful, 3 readings)
Rating:

Sam Mendes is a superb director; he made the superb American Beauty, and then followed up last year by directing his wife Kate Winslet in the excellent Revolutionary Road. He's a man clearly concerned with family life and the American dream, and whilst those films looked at families supposedly within the milieu of "the dream", here he examines something more low-key, in a family struggling to make it to the dream, in Away We Go, a more minimal but still impressive outing from the Brit director. The film opens as a couple, Verona De Tessant (Maya Rudolph) and Burt Farlander (John Krasinski) are going to have a baby, but the thought of bringing a new ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Away We Go (Blu-ray): An expectant couple take a road trip. (722 words)

Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are expecting their first baby, but although Burt's parents are thrilled for them, they are planning to move to Antwerp for two years and won't even get to see the baby before they go. They are empter nesters, eager to get on with the next phase of their lives. The expectant couple realise they are going to be on their own and begin to question whether they are grown up enough to cope. Verona: Are we f**K-ups? Burt: We're not f**K-ups. Verona: We have a cardboard window. Burt and Verona realize there is nothing to keep them there, living in a ramshackle house, and they decide to go on a road ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Go on then. Get out of here. (507 words)

"Love is like a jar of maple syrup, poured over sugar lumps sitting on top of a pancake." Sweet enough for you? It's not an exact quote from the film but it's close. And while I may have a sweet tooth, dollop after dollop of this amount of saccharine down your throat may well leave you with a distinct sickly feeling. Luring in the undeserving viewer by its description as a feel-good comedy road movie, it tells the story of Burt (John Krasinski) and his pregnant wife Verona (Maya Rudolph), and their quest to find a place to raise their first child. Burt's got a great job. He's an insurance salesman who doesn't need an office, he can just ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Away We Go (Blu-ray): Away We Go- Lets go with them (324 words)

I was curious what Sam Mendez would do after Revolutionary road,a film that i thought was well told. I was rather unimpressed with his American beauty but after watching Revolutionary road and now Away we go,i have to say he knows what he is doing! Away We Go is a simple film.A film about an expecting couple looking to move away from their previous home to a new place.Burt(an ordinary insurance sales person)and Verona suddenly make the decision of moving away after Burt's parents decide to move away to europe just before the due date of their child's birth. The not so young couple have a few options and the treatment of the film somehow invites the ...  Read the complete review
