Advantages: Would make a good drinks coaster
Disadvantages: Most of it
This is a review of the film only.
Away We Go is about a couple who are expecting their first child. They decide to travel around the United States in order to find the best place to bring up their child. They travel from place to place and meet a huge number of relatives and friends who make them realise that home isn't with them.
I was extremely disappointed with Away We Go, mainly down to the huge amount of talent that was behind the production. Sam Mendes has made some excellent films in the past, most notably 'American Beauty' and while an Englishman seems to understand the American psyche.
The film was a huge underwhelming experience. Mendes has tried his best to produce a quirky film along the same lines as Juno and Little Miss Sunshine, but what the hell was it all about? Having just finished watching it now I'm none the wiser as to what the film was about or what it was trying to say.
It was also quite an uncomfortable watch, with the myriad of different characters coming across as incredibly unbelievable. They weren't really stereotypes, they were just cringeworthy and sweary for no apparent reason.
John Krasinski was amiable and not too far removed from his character Jim in the American version of The Office. His pregnant partner played by Maya Rudolph is quite good also, but did not really capture my full attention. In all, they were a pretty underwhelming and that's a bit disappointing when they are the two people in nearly every scene.
One thing that also annoyed me was the fleeting appearance of Jeff Daniels who so deserved more screen time.
I would gladly never watch this film again, but you've got to try these things once haven't you?
Summary: Poor
