Advantages: Ok film
Disadvantages: Not funny enough for me
Baby Mama is a 2008 comedy drama film. In my opinion it was ok, not great, not bad but just ok. It's one of those films that now I've seen it I never really have to see it again as there would be no reason to. I enjoyed it but felt it was a little bit flat and felt they could have made a lot more of the story than they did. I don't think it had much marketing as it did not seem to be too well known. I first saw it being advertised in the US and don't really remember much advertising here.
As the name suggest the main theme of this movie is babies, and specifically the main characters endeavour to have one. Kate Holbrook is a successful business woman, who at 37 suddenly finds herself wanting a baby. She has put her career before her love/family life for a long time and starts to realise that she wants something different. She is not married and does not have a boyfriend so she looks at adoption and a sperm donor but when neither of these work she turns to surrogacy.
Cue Angie who Kate chooses as her surrogate or "Baby Mama," but god know why because she is a smoking, junk food eating immature child herself and they soon run into conflict. Angie runs into a bit of trouble and ends up having to come and live with Kate which adds to their differences. Add to that a cute guy who KAte starts seeing and life becomes quite complicated for both women.
I think the reason why this film was just ok for me was that I feel it could have been so so much funnier. Both the lead actresses, Tina Fey (Kate) and Amy Poehler (Angie) are comedians in the US and quite famous ones at that. They both appear on the US show Saturday Night Live which is a sketch comedy and variety show which has launched the career of many famous people. I have seen some of their stuff before and they are quite funny women. Tina Fey just recently did a impersonation of Sarah Palin the Alaskan Govenor which was uncanny! THis was why I though they could make the movie a lot funnier than it was. There were quite a lot of stereotypical situation they found themselves in but I don't think they capitalised on some of the situations.
The film ended well and was quite fitting, I would recommend seeing it but it's definitely not a classic but any means.
