Advantages: great bit of nostalgia, as good as i remember

Disadvantages: apparently there are a lot more extras lying around somewhere, but not on the discs

Well i've been waiting for this for nearly four years.

when i first got my dvd player all that time ago this was one of the films on the wishlist. i was looking forward to rediscovering this amazing trilogy on those nice shiny discs and getting all nostalgic in front of the telly.

Well the time has come.

Released just before christmas, the back to the future trilogy is an old fashioned 'event' movie. In fact it was one of the first back in its day, critics and fans alike were wowed by the amazing effects and brilliant storyline of the first film released in 1985 and clamoured for more after the teasing ending of 'to be continued'

But there was to be 2 sequels not just 1

Back to the future 2 and 3 were filmed back to back and released within a year of each other (a feat not repeated until this year with the matrix reloaded and revolutions) and both were radically different from the one before it (well 2 isnt really you could argue). Each part following on from the one before to make not three films but one kick ass epic.

BTTF1 starts with marty mcfly (michael j fox)r, bezzing about on his skateboard to huey lewis in good old 1985. His good old pal dr emmett brown (christopher lloyd) has built something amazing. A time machine, from a delorean??. before Dr brown can travel to the future in his new gadget he is killed by libian terrorists (damn those libians) and marty is forced to use the time machine and being transported to 1955.

Once in 1955 he accidentally gets in the way of the event that brings his mum and dad together thus jeopardising his entire future. It's only with the help of a young doc brown that he makes things right makes his future dad stand up to school bully Biff Tannen (thomas wilson) and gets BACK TO THE FUTURE.

An absolute classic film that is totally rewatchable and has some of the greatest iconic moments in film history.

BTTF2 takes off fr
om where the first one finished. Doc brown (now survived the libians attack) returns from the future just hours after marty has said farewell. In fact Doc has been in the future for months and has seen martys' family in the future and it doesnt look good. Doc takes marty and his girlfriend jennifer (elizabeth shue in the second two but someone else in the first) BACK TO THE FUTURE to set right an event that means his son spends the rest of his life in jail. Of course things dont go exactly to plan, Jennifer encounters her future self and is knocked unconcious. And marty (that little rascal) thinks it would be wise to take an almanac of future sports results back with him, you know, for a bit of money making. This almanac falls into the hands of future biff who steals the delorean and takes it back to 1955 and gives it to young biff. Young biff in turn uses it tomake billions. this is all unknown to marty and the doc who go back to 1985 like smug little gypsies only to find everything has changed. Martys dad is dead and his mother is married to biff, NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
So amrty and doc have to go back to 1955 to stop get the almanac off young biff. This is the ingenious bit because events in the first film are taking place with marty seeing himself doing things the night before as it were. Oh shut up at the back you've seen it before, you know what i mean. Anyway take my word for it it's great.
Suffice to say marty succeeds in retrieving the almanac and sets things straight. BUT!!! before they can go BACK TO THE FUTURE the delorean is struck by lightning sending it ........ SOMEWHERE.
minutes later marty recieves a telegram from doc who has been sent to the old west and ordered the letter to be given to marty in 1955!!!!
so, deep breath, marty goes to find.... young DOC!!

After that cliffhanger we see marty and Young doc unearth the delorean that has been buried way back in the old west, but actually down the road in a mine (that
doc is a freaking genius). marty is intending to take it BACK TO THE FUTURE but discovers in history books that doc was murdered by biff tannens ancestor days after sending the telegram. determined to save doc he goes BACK TO THE OLD WEST!!!!! to save doc and take him BACK TO THE FUTURE. When marty messes i time he becomes the one set to be killed so must face up to tannen to save the day.Doc gets all messed up with some tarty love interest clara clayton (mary steenburgen) and is forced to stayin the old west. Finally Marty gets BACK TO THE FUTURE and the time machine is destroyed meaning marty will never see doc again, or will he?

Viewed back to back, the BTTF trilogy is as enjoyable as oh lets say star wars (my opinion don't shoot me). Although only the first should really be viewed on it's own. The second film ranks just below godfather 2 and empire strikes back as the greatest sequel ever (its at least the most original sequel ever if that makes sense). The third chapter is a great movie, tying up the trilogy wonderfully, it's not my favourite of the bunch but is a fitting end to a great series.

The DVD boxset doesn't disappoint either. Each film has it's own documentary looking back on the production, the first two have docs filmed at the time. The first film has a great commentary from robert zemeckis and rob gayle plus a cool fact subtitle thing with behind the scene info and little known tit bits of info coming up on the screen. Each has deleted scenes and some pretty cool outtakes, plus the trailers greta photos and other technical gubbins.

A quality package (it looks really nice and shiny) that you can pick up for about 25 quid online (super bargain) and will keep you entertained for hours on end. Go on go BACK TO THE EIGHTIES, it's BRILLIANT!!!!
