Backdraft (DVD) ... / DVD released 05 June, 2006 at 4 Front Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / A somewhat contrived screenplay doesn't stop this thriller from serving up some of the most spectacular fire sequences ever committed to film. Like any Ron Howard production Backdraft is impressively slick and boasts a stellar cast, including Kurt Russell and William Baldwin. The actors play sibling rivals who have been at odds since the death of their firefighter father years earlier. Robert De Niro is the veteran fire inspector who is tracking a series of mysterious and deadly arsons and Donald Sutherland is effectively creepy as the former arsonist who understands the criminal psychology of pyromaniacs. Rebecca De Mornay, Scott Glenn and Jennifer Jason Leigh are featured in supporting roles. Backdraft is a triumph of stunt work and flaming special effects. --Jeff Shannon

The cast acts rather well, with Kurt Russels aggressive 'Bull' character providing a good contrast to Baldwins more reserved almost introverted character. Scott Glenn plays the primary antagonist, and although his motives are revealed to be honourable, he is quite a weak bad guy. So much so that this isn't even revealed until the last quarter of the film. The special effects are impressive, and the fi...more

Crowned Review Backdraft (DVD): Hot Stuff!!! (1884 words)
by - written on 13/12/05 (Very useful, 201 readings)
Rating:

I'm not sure exactly what it is that first attracted me to this film - well ok then I admit it - it was all to do with the thought of those lovely muscular bodies in uniform performing daring acts and perhaps even a couple of naked back shots in the shower. Backdraft has all this but also much more. It has love, hatred, and all the emotions in between as we find that it is not all about putting out fires but starting them too. This film was made in 1991 and directed by the awesome Ron Howard who I'm sure some of you will remember from his younger years in Happy Days along with Henry Winkler who played The Fonz. He's come a long way since that very successful ...  Read the complete review

Plot Two brothers in the Chicago fire department are tackling a number of fires which are resulting in the death of city officials who are cutting the fire service budgets. The fires have been set by someone with an apparent knowledge of fire behaviour, and they face a race against time to find the arsonist before anyone else is killed. An action thriller based on the trials and tribulations of the Chicago Fire service starring William Baldwin and Kurt Russel. This is quite an original take on the 'hero' genre of film. Direction from Ron Howard is up to its usual high standard, and is fairly meticulous. The cast acts rather well, with Kurt Russels ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Backdraft (DVD): One breath of oxygen and it explodes in a deadly rage. (621 words)

Being as this is my favourite film of all time, I thought it was about time I attempt to complete a decent review of it. Being as this is my first film review, please bear with me and I apologise if it is rubbish. Released in 1991, this is a film about firefighting, but much, much more than that. The blurb on the back of my DVD states it is about 2 fueding brothers, carrying on the heroic family tradition as Chicago firefighters. A series of arson attacks forces them to set aside their differences to solve these explosive crimes. That doesn't really say alot about the film really and I wouldn't be surprised if you read that and thought about ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Look at him. That's my brother God dammit! (515 words)

When Happy Days actor Ron Howard turned his attention to directing in 1969 with Old Paint, we knew straight away he was going to be a success. Following films such as Cocoon and Willow, he stepped up to the plate with an all star cast in the 1991 film, Backdraft. The film is set in the world of firefighting and features some amazing acting and special effects. The Plot Brian McCaffrey has dreamt of being a fireman since watching his firefighting father perish years previously. When he finally passes the tests and becomes a fireman, he and his brother must reluctantly join forces to fight the fires of Chicago while a dangerous arsonist is on the ...  Read the complete review
