Not reinventing the wheel but good

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room

Bad Boys is the film that shot director Michael Bay to fame (or as some would argue, infamy) - it's one of his better and more focused films, with great chemistry between leads Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, establishing Smith as a bankable Hollywood star and action hero.

Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) are detectives in the Miami-Dade Police Department. They recently nailed a $100m Heroin drug bust, but the drugs have been stolen from the police vault, causing their glory to all but fade away. The pesky Internal Affairs division shows up, claiming that the money was stolen by someone on the inside, and thus says that they have five days to get the money back or the Miami narcotics division will be shut down to make up the defecit, putting them out of work and also ensuring that drugs can flow freely in Miami.

Their only lead is Julie Mott (Téa Leoni), a woman who knows more than she lets on, but she'll only speak to Lowrey, and seeing as he's out of town at the time they find her, Burnett has to pretend to be Mike, and thus they keep this lie going, even moving into each other's apartments to keep with it, with the hope being they can keep their jobs and maintain clean streets.

If there's anything I have against Bad Boys, it's that it sits quite comfortably in the buddy cop formula and doesn't do anything to shake it up. On the plus side, though, it's visually stunning, as are most of Bay's films, and the action comes hard and fast. Also, Smith and Lawrence have great chemistry together, resulting in some hilarious scenes throughout.

A fun, slick, action-packed buddy film that entertains and doesn't take itself too seriously in the process.

captures the true meaning of a blockbuster cop movie

      Introduction

Bad Boys is a great action comedy cop film. I can't believe it is now 14 years old having been originally released in 1995. It stars two great comedians/actors as the leads and is action packed being directed by Michael Bay (Armageddon, Transformers). The film also resulted in a sequel Bad Boys 2 released in 2003.

      Plot

The film stars the characters of Detective Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence),a straight-laced family man who is a partner to Detective Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) who is Burnett's polar opposite. He's a fast-living ladies man with a passion for sports cars. They are partners on the Miami Police Department, and they are about to take on a highly dangerous case. 100 million dollars in heroin, from the biggest drug bust of their careers, is stolen from police headquarters. They now have 72 hours to reclaim the heroin before the Internal Affairs Division gets involved. This puts Mike and Marcus hot on the trail of a French drug kingpin named Fouchet. To complicate matters, in order to get the assistance of the sole witness to a murder, they have to pretend to be each other.

      Opinion

Bad Boys is a traditional all action-cop film and as you can imagine it is filled with hot action sequences, fast cars and beautiful women.

Smith and Lawrence really do compliment each other very well. Smith's the sleek, cool one who is popular with the ladies while Lawrence is often nervous, and is very much the direct opposite of Smith. They have good on-screen chemistry and you do believe that they are good friends and partners. There are lots of funny parts and great one liners.

The directing by bay is great and leads to the great action sequences and stunts you would come to expect from many of his movies. The film captures the true meaning of a blockbuster cop movie and is enjoyable to watch as well as being funny. It probably appeals to the male population more especially with the description of action, fast cars and women but it can be enjoyed by anyone especially those who are a fan of the genre.

        5 stars

I have to say I love this movie. From start to finish I do not find any parts boring or mediocre.

The relationship between Smith and Lawrence is great, you almost believe that they have not been scripted during som of their little tiffs! It really is a pleasure to watch!

Basically Smith and Lawrence are Detectives in Miami, and are polar opposites to each other. Smith is a rich player while Lawrence is a family man. There is a small case of mistaken identities whereby they have to pretend to be each other in front of a witness (Tea Leoni). This brings much of the comedy value to the movie.

Im not sure if this was intended to be a comedy, there is certainly enough great action sequences to indicate that this was not an essential part, but as the chemistry is so great between the two leads, it is difficult not to laugh at the situations the get themselves into.

The DVD version that I have is the collectors edition, with a couple of featurettes and music videos, but to be honest, I didnt buy it for the extras!

This really is a movie for all, a proper action movie that doesnt take itself seriously ends up working even better!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A fantastic film with a great cast and a good storyline throughout.

Bad Boys was released in 1995 and was directed by Michael Bay with it's main stars being Martin Lawrence & Will Smith who also work together in Bad Boys 2 which was a follow on to this film released in 2003.

The plot of the film follows Lawrence & Smith who play Marcus Burnett & Mike Lowrey who are detectives working in the Miami Police Department and as such they get put on a case to attempt to bust a gang who have stolen $100,000,000 of seized heroin and the detectives establish that one of them is an ex-cop who has some inside information and they have to work to get the only witness to an ensuring crime to testify but first she must be rescued after being found & kidnapped.

I think that the pairing of Lawrence & Smith works very well together and they both have a comic element to them that lifts the film and makes it a must-see movie for any fans of action & adventure films. The storyline runs well throughout and there are no holes in the plot for me to pick at because I can be quite fussy about films and things being realistic or well acted and I did find this to be the case with this film throughout.

I would recommend this film to any fans of the action & adventure genre as there is lots to keep everyone entertained as well as a few smaller stories running in the background to keep people occupied and thoughtful throughout the film. Some aspects may have been slightly predictable but I often find this with this type of film. I was kept occupied throughout and thoroughly enjoyed this film, as I have each time I have watched it.

The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £3.98 or as part of a set with Bad Boys 2 for just £4.98 and this is what I would recommend as it's best value for money and both films work very well together. There may be extras on the DVD but I don't watch these so would not be able to comment. The running time is 114 minutes.

I am rating this film 4/5 as I thoroughly enjoyed it and think that it was well acted if a little predictable at times.

Great film, tonnes of action and absolutely hilarious

An all action packed film that is absolutely hilarious. Will Smith stars in this blockbuster alongside Martin Lawrence where they form a great team. The story is about drug dealers robbing a police stattion and stealing evidence in the form of illegal drugs. The duo have to get the drugs back and apprehend the criminals, but things do not go as planned. A woman gets involved, being a key witness, she does not just perform this role, but manages to cause unforseen problems. The relationship between Lawrence and Smith is clearly one that produces results and this film is a must watch for those of you who enjoy an action packed ride. The humourous element of this quality is one I must stress, the chemistry between the two is absolutely brilliant! This film is not the end, there is a Bad Boys II where the story continues 10 years later.

A good entertaining and action packed movie needs a few raw ingredients to make it enjoyable and down right entertaining, such as a good, exciting plot, several great scenic shots, some sexy moves and a lot of witty one liners. But the main ingredient for a perfectly baked portion of Nouvelle cuisine is a couple of attention-grabbing main characters. If they instantly come across as obnoxious , dull and soon to be hated people, who the audience would not care whether they were ripped apart in the opening scenes, then even the finest ingredients from the shelves of Harrods wouldn't make this pudding worth eating.
Fortunately, this one has managed to take every little component to make this movie into what can be likened to a finely tuned engine, giving everything one needs for a great couple of hours of comical, fast paced, good guy versus bad guy motion picture.
And when you realise that Simpson and Bruckheimer had a hand in other hits such as Top Gun, Beverley Hills Cop, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour and The Rock, then you know you are in for a good time. (and for all you Skins fans Bruikheimer had a hand in that tv show too).

Released in 1995 by Columbia pictures this near two hour movie has been given an 18 certificate due some slightly graphic violent scenes.

            ** BRIEF PLOT..

Mike Lowry, (Smith) is a confident womanising police officer from Miami-Dade Police department, working with his married with three children, and less confident partner, Marcus Burnett (Lawrence).
There life suddenly changes when the drugs from a bust they were involved in are suddenly stolen from inside the station, leading to theories of an inside job, giving Lowry and Burnett days to find the culprits or face the closure of the drug unit.
During their investigations they realise that there's a connection between the crime and the murder of one of Lowry's ex-girlfriends, but there is a witness to the murder, Julie Mott, (played by Téa Leona). Unfortunately, she will only speak to Lowry, even though she has never met him, but when Burnett can't locate him he decides to become him in order to extract the truth from the frightened woman.
So with Lowry becoming Burnett and visa-versa the pair try to find the truth about the murders and the drug theft, but things don't go according to plan when they have to deal with a wife's jealousy and an angry French drug baron.

            ** IN CONCLUSION...

A cracking comedy action movie with the brilliant Smith joining forces with the equally talented comedian/actor who is Martin Lawrence, who does remind me of Eddie Murphy in many ways.
The pair seem to take this well written plot and completely make it there own, giving the audience a couple of new characters on the scene who they can almost relate too.
Smith plays Lowry as your typical confident, load mouth man of the world who enjoys his single life to the full, finding much satisfaction in his womanising ways.
Meanwhile, Lawrence's character, Burnett, is the complete opposite, being a happy family man who is totally committed to the one woman in his life.

So the idea to switch the characters life style works brilliantly, with Burnett becoming the womaniser, albeit stuttering along like my old Vauxhall Vectra driving up hill and as much confidence as cornered pigeon, then turning Smith into the role of the happy family man, although his roving eye does tend to give his game away a little.
In fact, the entire cast, being as small as it is, do a fantastic job keeping the story flowing nicely, with the romantic element adding that little bit extra to round the story off with some credibility.

As for the plot itself, well it isn't anything new...think Lethal Weapon meets Miami Vice and you have the idea... it is your standard good guy-bad guy shoot-em up with car chases, high jumping aerobics, (well choreographed may I add) and the usual romantic involvement. But this one has that little twist of characteristic swapping sewn into the hem, giving the plot some comical interventions... and with the comedians involved you know you'll be amused throughout the near two hours it is on the screen.

In all, a fine entertaining movie and well worth watching for the comedy value alone, so adding the good story line and the brilliant characters you can't go wrong.
And you know you'll be humming the theme tune after you watch this... the words 'watcha gunna doo..?... bad boys bad boys'... running through your mind

If you want to get a copy of this then they do it for less than a fiver on amazon and for that you get a few extras such as...A few music videos, picture galleries, documentary and your usual subtitles.

              action thriller

Bad Boys is a fast paced action adventure thriller which has two fast talking lead characters and is one of those buddy cop films that Hollywood does so well.

In this film the two leads are played by Will Smith as Mike Lowry a rich boy who joined the polce force against his families wishes and leads a play boy lifestyle and his partner Marcus Burnett played by Martin Lawrence who is a family man at heart who is a little jealous of his partners life style. When a major heroin bust is stolen while in police custody the two come under suspiscion as the two cops who made the initial arrest and when a prostitute friend of Lowrys is killed by the robbers along with one of their own Lowry and Burnett discover that there is a witness played by Tea Leoni however she confuses the two cops and turns herself into Burnett rather than Lowry and the two sort of swap roles.

This is a good action film with some nice comedy moments, the strength of the film rests with the two lead characters and their on screen bickering, lots of car chases and shoot outs follow and the pace of the film is just right.

It is one of those films made for the viewer to sit back and enjoy the roller coaster ride of stunts and fast talking dialogue, if this is not your type of film then you will hate it but if you like Eddie Murphy and Lethal Weapon then this should appeal as it sort of combines the two.

                Will Smith at his best

Written by Michael Barrie, Doug Richardson, George Gallo and Jim Mulholland, and directed by Michael Bay Bad Boys was released in June 1995.

                ****Story Line****

Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowry (Will Smith) are partners in the Miami Police Department. Whilst Lowry is the ultimate 'pimp' who enjoys the playboy lifestyle of fast cars and even faster women, Burnett is the 'traditional' family man with a wife and 3 kids living the quiet suburbs.

$100 million of heroin seized in the biggest drug bust of Burnett's and Lowry's career has been stolen from police head quarters and the pair have 72 hours to get it back or potentially lose their jobs as the internal affairs division threaten to close down their division.

Whilst Burnett and Lowry go on the trail of the prime suspect, Fouchet (Tcheky Karyo) a French drug baron, they ask a local prostitute they know, Maxine (Karen Alexander), to keep an eye out for any clues that could help them retrieve the drugs.

Maxine, along with her friend Julie (Tea Leoni) end up going to the house of former cop Eddie Dominguez (Emmanuel Xuereb) where they make some interesting discoveries that ultimately leads to Maxine being murdered.

Julie manages to escape and calls the police. Although she has never met Lowry, or knows what he looks like, she will only deal with him as he knew Maxine and she trusted him. Unfortunately, Lowry is unavailable so Burnett impersonates him to gain her trust and ensure that she, as the key witness, is retained to give the evidence required to solve not only the drugs case but the new murder case as well.

Burnett uses Lowry's apartment as a safe house and moves Julie in. When Lowry returns he is surprised to find Julie and even more shocked that he now has to 'trade' lives with Burnett, but for the sake of their careers he agrees until everything is sorted out. With the death of Maxine the case has now got personal.

Fouchet is aware that Julie is the only witness and that he needs to ensure that she is not available to give evidence against him. Fouchet tracks Julie down and one of his henchmen manages to kidnap her.

Burnett and Lowry's workload has now doubled and the stakes are much higher. Will they manage to rescue Julie, bring Fouchet and his gang to justice, retrieve the drugs and keep their jobs?

                ****Other characters****

In addition to the characters above there are loads of other characters in this film. The main ones include:

                i) Theresa Burnett (Theresa Randle) - Burnett's wife
ii) Megan Burnett (Tiffany Samuels) - Burnett's daughter
iii) Quincy Burnett (Scott Cumberbatch) - Burnett's son
iv) James Burnett (Cory Hodges) - Burnett's son
                v) Detective Sanchez (Nestor Serrano) - Miami detective
vi) Detective Ruez (Julio Mechosa) - Miami detective
vii) Noah Trafficante (Marc Macaulay) - Gang member
viii) Kuni (Ralph Gonzalez) - Gang member
ix) Henchman (Martin McSorley) - Gang member
                x) Henchman (Norman Maxwell) - Gang member

In addition to the above there are various other sundry characters including other gang members, other detectives etc. The cast list is huge.

The main characters clearly steal the lime light in this film, but then that is the case in most films so it's not really unexpected. That said the supporting actors do a great job but there are no real 'wow' moments with them.

                ****Opinion****

Whilst the main story line of this film could actually happen it has obviously been exaggerated in this film. This is to be expected of American films since they all blow everything out of proportion. Personally I don't think that this ruins the film in any way whatsoever since it all adds to more extreme stunts, more extreme shoot-outs and more extreme car chases. When watching films like this I am under no illusions taking everything I see with a pinch of salt and watching it for the entertainment value only.

The onscreen relationship between Burnett and Lowry is great and the partnership really works. I like the way that they have taken a person that is a 'player' and a person that is a 'family man' and chucked them together. Whilst Burnett whinges about being 'under the thumb' and wishes he had Lowry's life on the exterior, deep down he is more than content with what he has. Deep down Lowry is jealous of his partner and whilst he has the Porsche and the playboy lifestyle deep down he really wants stability and the family life that Burnett enjoys.

The acting in this film is superb. It really is Will Smith at his best. He has such a presence and this comes through in this film. In addition to this he has a slight comical edge that, again comes out during his performance in this film. Martin Lawrence is very good in this film but I think he plays second fiddle to Will Smith in all respects. It is a shame because Martin Lawrence is a great actor but then it takes an exceptional actor to out shine Will Smith.

I also think that Theresa Randle (Burnett's wife) does a great job as the wife that feels she is playing second fiddle to not only her husband's career but his partner as well. Her performances are very emotive, and whilst over the top in some places (but then that is the American way) they are very good and truly believable.

                ****Would I recommend it?****

This is a fast paced, fast action film with plenty of shoot-outs and car chases. In addition there is focus on family issues as well as the strong relationship between Burnett and Lowry, which is quite endearing. The storyline may be a bit far fetched but it is not so extreme it is ridiculous. Taking all this in to account, and the fact that it stars Will Smith (who is a fantastic actor) I would definitely recommend this film and think that it is a worthy part of any DVD collection.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

                  The sequel surpasses it.

These days, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simspon and director Michael Bay are well known to viewers for their catalogue of hits, particularly in the action genre. Back in 1995 they had barely gotten off the mark; Bad Boys, however, united Will Smith (in his breakout performance) and Martin Lawrence as the two mismatched cops, in amidst of the team's soon-to-be-trademark explosion; the film became an instant hit.

If you've already seen the much more over the top (and far superior) sequel then you'll think the action in Bad Boys is much paler in comparison. Granted, the film had much lesser budget at the time, and relies on much of Smith's charm and verbal exchanges with Lawrence to carry the viewer's attention through until the end. Personally, I've never been a fan of Martin Lawrence, but, admittedly, he's quite enjoyable to watch here, mainly due to Smith intervening at the right moments. It's worth noting that many of the scenes between the two actors were improvised, which further demonstrated their on screen chemistry. In contrast, the less said about the bad guys the better- they suck... would you be scared of a soft spoken Frenchman? Well, I wasn't anyway.

Plot wise, Detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) have to protect a murder witness (Tea Leoni), and find the big bad foreigner responsible- oh and he also happens to be the one that robbed the Police Station's $100 million worth of heroin. The bastard. To make things even harder, somewhere in the middle of it all they're forced to swap identities (if you haven't seen it then I won't spoil it for you by telling you why), which unleashes the comic potential to the film's high point. Things eventually come to justice in the end for the characters via a fantastic shoot out in the hanger, and a balls-to-the-floor car chase, which just oozes coolness.

The cinematography is frequently inventive, and makes Miami a seemingly beautiful setting (believe me, it wasn't anything like that when I visited a few years back). This is typically Brucheimer, if you've ever seen any of his latter films (i.e. Con Air, The Rock etc.), as it favours style over suspense; the score too is great for anyone who loves Hip Hop and R n' B (and maybe anyone who doesn't).

If you prefer the more "Laid back" feel of a movie then you'll no doubt enjoy the original Bad Boys more so than its big brother sequel. That's not to say Bad Boys is really a "Laid back" movie, in the sense that you're likely to show it to your grandmother while she camps out in her smock and slippers with a nice cup of tea; there's still plenty of action scenes here that permit your time wondering about things like logic and coherence. It's just, compared to the sequel, it's... well, I've told you already...

                  Disadvantages

A cop/buddy movie perfect for a bit of escapism

Bad Boys is a 1995 film starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. This is one of Will Smith's first big-screen roles and it showcases his trademark cheeky arrogant style of acting to perfection.

The film is a cop/buddy movie in the style of the Lethal Weapon films, however the language is a lot coarser and the action scenes much more explosive and violent. It is a typical Jerry Bruckheimer film, in the style of The Rock and Armageddon, in that it is essentially style over substance. The plot of the film is pretty irrelevant; what makes it so good is the on-screen chemistry between the two leads, and there are some fantastic comedy moments, not least when the two main characters have to trade lives in order to get information from the witness to a murder (played by Tea Leoni, who my husband has a bit of a thing for in this film!)

Much of the dialogue between the two leads is improvised, which makes it very edgy and amusing. The action scenes in the film are fantastic, and the film was very successful worldwide.

The soundtrack of the film is also really good, featuring such mid-90s tunes as "Shy Guy" by Diana King and of course "Bad Boys" by Inner Circle.

The sequel to this film is also really funny and I would recommend both films if you want some escapism peppered with some belly laughs and some great action.

                  Action film

Bad Boys is a pretty good action movie which is based on the best buddy relationship of two Miami police detectives who are in the anti drugs unit. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are the fast talking pair, Smiths character is a real ladies man who enjoys the single life and the fact that he comes from money and thus has lots of designer gear and a fast car, Lawrence is the family man with a beautiful wife and kids whose life is rather mour mundane and he has a lot less money.

When a woman known to Smith is murdered by a drug dealer there is a witness to the killing however she mistakenly thinks that Lawrence is actually Smith and the two have to swap lives for a while in order to keep he jittery witness safe.

The plot to this film is paper thin however the action is constant, full of high speed car chaces and shoot outs with criminals, it is quite a violent film and there is a lot of bad language as well but there are also some good funny moments in the film.

This is not one of Smiths better films as it lacks any real depth but as a buddy cop movie it is pretty good although no where near the standard of the first Lethal Weapon film.

A great movie that has action, comedy, and meaning.

When I finished watching this movie, I was laughing so hard my stomach was hurting. This movie is extremely hilarious, yet action-packed at the same time. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make an awesome team, but have their differences providing us, the viewers, with constant entertainment. This movie has a high rank in my opinion. It has comedy, action, some suspense. That's a good movie right there. This movie, in my opinion, never really had a bad part. The two partners are introduced and then bam right away action! This movie will have you falling out of your seat. It was awesome! Martin Lawrence and Will Smith in this movie are ridiculously funny. Be prepared folks, because this movie is going to have you laughing. A lot. I definitely recommend this movie to others, but remember it is rated R due to the extreme language so be careful. Other than that, a great movie.

Big car chases big gun fights - big entertainment

Bad boys is a fantastic film jam packed with action and some light comedy thrown in for good measure. I mean with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence staring in it how could there not be some comedic value.

Massive drug heist from the local police station and then it all kicks off with big Guns and explosions. And i mean if that is your thing then this is a film that I would Highly recomment to you. The two cops (will & Mike) are asked/told by their station captain that they will solve the case of the missing drugs, and they would do it no matter what. They trawl the streets of Miami Shooting up all the ganges to try and find the drugs. It all cmes to fruition when they find the gang ewho stole the drugs and theire is a huge gun fight and lots of car chases. Get on the bad boys you cant go wrong.

                      Disadvantages

You have to watch this film!

I could recite the words of this film i have seen it so many times. It really is a classic!

In my opinion, this is another no compromising action film, deffinately a lads film! Will Smith and martin Lawrence are 2 miami cops, investigating a robbery of cocain from the police station (the police had conviscated it, it wasnt theirs!), and it gets personal when one of Mikes (Smith) "close friends" gets killed.

When a witness shows up claiming to be the deceaseds best friend, having seen the murder, she calims she will only deal with Mike, although as he is not at the police station, his partner Marcus (Lawrence) pretends to be him.

Sound good? It gets better, the witness is Tia Leoni, and when she gets kidnapped by the "bad guys", Mike and Marcus are not happy, and are determined to get her back.

This is another great film, and the director (Michael Bay [transformers]) must have had fun making this! I really cant do justice to just how good this film is. The 2nd one is not as good, but still fun.

                        Advantages

                        Disadvantages

Comedy and action packed into one

The fast talking pair of comedy actors Will Smith and Martin Lawrence combined in 1995 with director Michael Bay to provide us with a fast paced cop buddy action film encompassing a powerful soundtrack and some quirky one-liners. The film is kept solid by some frenetic car chases scenes and a decent plot.

                        The Plot

Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett are partners on the force. Mike is the smooth-talking womaniser, while Marcus is the frantic family man who talks the hind legs of the donkey! The pair of them are set to investigate the theft of millions of dollars of heroin from inside the police station. When Mike's sometime girlfriend is murdered in front of her friend Julie, the pair must protect Julie from the drugs barons and murderers responsible. However, due to a mistaken case of identity, Julie thinks Marcus is Mike, and Marcus isn't about to change her mind. The trio must stay safe and solve the case.

                        The Cast and Performances

Will Smith is right at home here, with lots of room for ego to move around in and make Lowry his own. His acting here is reminiscent of his performances in Fresh Prince, with some classic one-liners and a bold front being the mainstay of his character. Martin Lawrence is perhaps the better actor as Marcus. The character is a cop with a family, and when he is given the chance to pretend to be Mike, a bit of a playboy, he jumps at it and it is a testament to his skills as an actor that Marcus fails miserably at being cool.

Tea Leoni plays Julie, and does the role justice. Tcheky Karyo is good as a villain, and the remainder of the cast perform well.

                        My Opinion

This 1995 film is full of high octane stereotypical chases and drugs plotlines. The cops buddy up and save each other countless number of times with some comedy one-liners that will make you chuckle. I felt that director Michael Bay had found a niche here suiting his style which he transferred over to his subsequent films, including Pearl Harbor and Transformers. The key element here is the blockbuster feel toi the film. Bay gives us immense special effects and soundtracking in order to give us the impression that this is a very big deal indeed.

In fact, there is nothing special about the film, and that is what makes it so good. The film has a basic plot that has been explored before, with a pair of cops potecting a witness to a crime, and little elements are injected here and there to provide a bit more interest and ultimately som comedy. The roles of Smith and Lawrence were so successful that a sequel was made a few years later. This was not as successful but still did well.

Slick to a fault, this glossy action flick takes place in sunny Florida, where Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play two cops--one married with kids, the other a swinging bachelor. The two are forced to trade places to foil criminal mastermind Fouchet (Tchéky Karyo) who has stolen $100 million worth of heroin from a police lockup. Violent, illogical and filled with wall-to-wall profanity, Bad Boys was the last film produced by the hit-making team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer before Simpson's untimely death and marked the directorial debut of Michael Bay who followed up with The Rock. Bad Boys will be of interest to action buffs and fans of Téa Leoni, who makes one of her early screen appearances in the central supporting role. --Jeff Shannon
