These get more impressive towards the end of the film, because additional sources of funding for the film were found! Do not underestimate the nastiness of the film - expect a lot of swearing, spurting blood, splattered brains and a whole host of other violent and gory special effects. The "gruel" scene in particular stands out from the rest of the film as be...more

Premium Review Bad Taste (DVD): Ahead of its time darkly comic debut for Peter Jackson (265 words)
by - written on 05/10/09 (Very useful, 9 readings)
Rating:

"Bad Taste" was made on a zero budget (about $1,000) and is Peter "Lord of Rings" Jackson's directorial debut. He also acts in it. This is strictly a cult movie and it is a shame that more people can't disengage their stomachs when watching it. There is an onslaught of gratuitous turn-your-head gore, but Jackson's not stop comic direction stops this from becoming a horror movie. The film was clearly made by a group of friends who love movies and is devoid of any artistic-minded pretentiousness. Today it is regarded by many as a cult classic and although different in execution I find pitch black humour comparisons with the weirdly wonderful A League of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bad Taste (1987) - "I'm a Derek and Dereks don't run!" (1138 words)
by - written on 20/02/09 (Very useful, 135 readings)
Rating:

New Zealand filmmaking sensation Peter Jackson, who won over the hearts of the masses with his epic 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, started out in humble beginnings. Extremely humble in fact. His first film, 'Bad Taste' was originally conceived as a short that Jackson started making with his mates when struggling for things to do in their mundane, small town surroundings. It was a project that occupied the weekends, four years worth of weekends as it turned out with Jackson planning out scenes to shoot during the week. He constantly added new elements to the story and before he knew it he was on his way to making a fully fledged feature and with a little help from the New ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bad Taste (DVD): I'm A Derek And Derek's Don't Run (824 words)

A good 4 or 5 years ago now I came across a classic film. A friend of mine had been to New Zealand and picked up a video directed by Peter Jackson. The rumour had it that he was currently filming a certain Lord Of The Rings trilogy but this video, Bad Taste, was his first film. It was made in 1987 and is a long way from the glitz, glamour and budget of Lord Of The Rings. In fact the film is budget and stars Jackson and a few of his mates and surprisingly its really good in a its so bad that its good kind of way. It took almost 4 years for Peter and his mates to make and star in the film, fitting the filming in around their day jobs. They worked on the film ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bad Taste (DVD): Aren't I lucky, I got a chunky bit! (998 words)

By now, after the immense success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, there can be very few people who like movies but who haven't heard of Kiwi film-maker Peter Jackson. But not all his films were made on such an epic scale and with such huge budget. This review is of his first full length film, Bad Taste, a revolting comedy sci-fi/horror film made to a shoestring budget. It was finished in 1987, but had been filmed over the course of several years. This review covers the film only, since my copy is on VHS. ===The plot=== The premise of this story is that aliens (lead by the evil Lord Crumb) have invaded the small New Zealand village of Kaihoro and have ...  Read the complete review
