This is a film that peeps out at you from the shelf, enticing you with blurb that asserts its controversial content. So, you feel it's worth a few quid for your world cinema collection and pop it in the disc tray and settle on the sofa for the next 80 minutes. A couple of years ago there were a wave of French films that were causing a spot of bother with the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). These films were portraying images of sex on screen in a revolutionary way. What would you say to a film initially banned by the French censors for its 18 certificate and re-classified as X, a category revealing its use of pornography? To some it may seem the last film they might want to watch, to others it sounds appealing. Err, ok, so the title of this film is 'Rape Me', is it? That seems to be the semi sanitised version of the title that your dear British selves (and Americans to boot, which is probably nearer to the point) are getting. Baise-Moi WARNING: This film contains prolonged sex scenes of an extremely explicit nature and scenes of graphic violence, which some viewers may find shocking and disturbing. So the box proclaims. It's hard to imagine anyone not being shocked and disturbed actually. Manu and Nadine. The rape... There's no name actress to be impressed by their acting talent or to have any feelings about.
