Bambi (2 DVDs) ... February, 2005 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, Box set, PAL / It always comes up when people are comparing their most traumatic movie experiences: "the death of Bambi's mother," a recollection that can bring a shudder to even the most jaded filmgoer. That primal separation (which is no less stunning for happening off-screen) is the centerpiece of Bambi, Walt Disney's 1942 animated classic, but it is by no means the only bold stroke in the film. In its swift but somehow leisurely 69 minutes, Bambi covers a year in the life of a young deer. But in a bigger way, it measures the life cycle itself, from birth to adulthood, from childhood's freedom to grown-up responsibility. All of this is rendered in cheeky, fleet-footed style--the movie doesn't lecture, or make you feel you're being fed something that's good for you. The animation is miraculous, a lush forest in which nature is a constantly unfolding miracle (even in a spectacular fire, or those dark moments when "man was in the forest"). There are probably easier animals to draw than a young deer, and the Disney animators set themselves a challenge with Bambi's wobbly glide across an ice-covered lake, his spindly legs akimbo; but the sequence is effortless and charming. If Bambi himself is just a bit dull--such is the fate of an Everydeer--his rabbit sidekick Thumper and a skunk named Flower more than make up for it. Many of the early Disney features have their share of lyrical moments and universal truths, but Bambi is so simple, so pure, it's almost transparent. You might borrow a phrase from Thumper and say it's downright twitterpated. --Robert Horton

I bought this film for my boys several months ago and I have to say I have never actually sat and watched the whole film until last night. I had heard about the story and had seen various scenes from the film but decided it was time to sit and watch it properly. I put the children to bed and sat and managed to watch it all the way through un-interrupted! What a joy this film was. THE STORY The film begins with all the forest animals gathering round to meet the new prince of the forest who is called Bambi. Bambi soon goes off walking around the forest with his mother and meets several of the animals. One of the animals he meets ...  Read the complete review

**Take the first letters of my title and what do you get? AHA! BAMBI** With recent releases of animated movies like Shrek, Monsters Inc and Toy Story we see how far animation has come with the advent of the computer and the benefits that the computer can give to the artist. We somehow forget that these current marvels owe a lot to many classics that still can hold their head up in today’s modern computerized world. During the 1930s and 1940s, Disney was at the height of its success spawning many classic movies – Pinnocchio, Snow White and dozens more show the quality of Disney’s animators and proves that success is more ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Bambi (2 DVDs): Great For Kids (330 words)

When I first saw this movie I must have been around 5 or 6 years old and it was Christmas. Now 23, and having been sold on the hype that the movie was one of the best ever made I decided to watch it again...and was somewhat disappointed that it didn't live up to my previous experience. Bambi, for those who do not know, is the animated story of a deer who is orphaned when his mother is killed by a hunter. The other animals come to his aid especially his great friend thumper and help him grow up as, after all, he is the new prince of the forest... That is basically the entire storyline in a nutshell. The scene where Bambi's mother is killed is ...  Read the complete review

This has got to be my favourite Disney Movie, a simple movie about an orphaned baby deer, named Bambi, of course :) Its such a sweet movie you cant help falling in love with 'Bambi' and all the other little characters including 'Thumper' the bunny and 'Flower' the shy skunk. Of course being Walt Disney its also a touching tale, really worth investing in. We bought this years ago when it first came out on video and now its my children that love watching it. Its a really heartwarming tale, but also sad too especially when little Bambi loses his mother, but it has exceedingly funny parts too, like where Bambi tries to walk across ...  Read the complete review

This is a classic story that most people will have heard of. It is about a young deer that looses his mother to poachers. Whilst in open ground. It starts off with the birth of bambi where all the animals gather round to meet him. Then Thumper who is the loud and over excited rabbit decides to make friends with him. He finds it extremely funny when Bambi trys to walk for the first time. And soon gets told off for laughing at the young deer. As time goes by they make good friends with all the other young animals such as a skunk and soon another young but female deer. But after the tragic death of his mother Bambi has to learn about ...  Read the complete review
