Advantages: Metal tin, amazing PQ and AQ, exclusive extras (PiP), cheap (£22.99), best miniseries I've watched
Disadvantages: None
Band of Brothers is a ten part TV miniseries following Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the Second World War. The first episode starts at the Currahee training site and is brilliantly done. David Schwimmer stars as Captain Herbert Sobel with a very believable performance, despite being Ross from Friends.
It has been highly praised, albeit slightly exaggerated, for its details on the war and what the soldiers had to endure. Spielberg and Hanks manage to instantly create characters that you want to succeed. Character development was clearly top priority and it really paid off. Combined with the well written dialogue, the series shows detailed military strategy, friendship, loss and true emotion from an amazing cast.
The 1080p/VC-1 encoded transfer is an absolute delight to look at. A huge upgrade from the bland and most definitely inferior DVD. There was a little DNR used which I thought gave a cleaner and crisper picture. Others argue it wasn't needed but I think we are unanimous that Band of Brothers has terrific video quality. All ten episodes have a DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 track providing near flawless audio. This miniseries really benefits from high definition with gunfire, explosions, screams and dialogue which puts you right into the centre of the battlefield. If you want to test out your new audio set up, Band of Brothers is your answer.
As if arguably the best TV miniseries ever made with an outstanding HD transfer wasn't enough, Warner Brothers include all the DVD extra features, as well as further HD exclusive supplements in the form of bonus features for each episode and ten PiP tracks. Most notably; "We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company", a 78 minute documentary in full HD.
If you own a Blu-Ray player, I cannot recommend this enough. It is an absolute must-own series. If you don't own a Blu-Ray player... what's wrong with you!? This set is only £5 more than the standard DVD and perfectly showcases how much more enjoyable a viewing experience can be in high definition. It even comes in a special metal tin, instead of the cardboard DVD version.
Summary: A phenomenal set
