Advantages: Cult Classic , Jane Fonda is great, Story
Disadvantages: None
heard many things about Barbarella, it has sort of become a cult favorite among many fans and finally I got my hands on it, through EBAY. I came away slightly disappointed because I was expecting at least some special effects since in fact the title is listed as a Science Fiction film "Barbarella :Queen of the Galaxy". However most of the disappointment went away when I saw Jane Fonda , it's no wonder why she became a sex symbol in her day. Also I enjoyed the 60's references made in the movie: psychadelic music, "make love and not war" message. The film was taken from the comic book from Jean-Claude Forest and directed by Roger Vadim who was actually Fonda's husband at the time. She did seem to land roles at will when she had a certain relationship with directors The plot involves Barbarella going on a special mission to rescue Duran ,Duran (Not the singer) a scientist who vanished wihle visiting North Star near Sogo. Duran Duran has invented a posotronic ray -A laser weapon which can destroy any object in its path. The make love instead of war message comes in when Barbarella first greets her boss, Mr. President (No not George Bush!!! LOL). They both greet each other by saying "LOVE". Love indeed. Then Mr. President informs Barbarella of Duran, Duran and responds "Why would anyone want to make a weapon. The film also has a reference to Star Trek. Barbarella's spaceship is controlled by a computer, and the computer talks to Barbarella, just like Star Trek. In fact, the computer is more human , than the generic computer voice in Star Trek. And yes I have no doubt that Star Trek had an effect on this movie along with the 1960's itself of war, love and drugs. Barbarella encounters a magnetic field on her way to Sogo, and crashlands. She encounters some innocent children, who then turn on her and try to kill her with some sharped teethed do
lls. For 1968,the effects for this scenes were truely remarkable, the dolls do look scary and their sharp teeth look very realistic. Barbarella is rescued by whats called a "catcherman" named Marken. She then crashlands her ship again near Sogo and meets Pygar, a blind winged man who has lost the will to fly. John Phillip Law is excellent in his role as this hero. He was blinded by the Great Tyrant of Sogo. A sexy bondage type of girl with a fetish who affectionally calls Barbarella her "pretty pretty" when they first meet. Barbarella then is put through several torture chambers and does eventually find Duran, Duran who is a mad scientist by this point. Barbarella is really a "B" movie, but it's probably one of the most memorable B movies of all time because of its reference to the 60s (good or bad): Drug Use, sexuality, pyschodelic music, almost naked females. I highly recommended "Barbarella" to any movie fan, despite the fact that it was made in 1968 only shows that the movie has gained quite a following in the last 30 yrs. Just like "Easy Rider" had an effect on the bike phenomen, "Barbarella" also had an effect on the make love, not war message of the 1960's. Jane Fonda is and shall every remain a sex symbol no better indication of that than "Barbarella", so this great cult hit while it's still available as prints of the movie are hard to find. There was a planned remake of "Barbarella" scheduled to be starring Drew Barrymore, however, the remake has now been officially shelved. I received some popular responses to this review when I first published this on the other site, but I am going to share a stupid comment added by the person who has been harassing me and who now has a fake account on the same site: "I'm going to stop rating your reviews. You h
ave a systemic problem with poor structure, grammar, and spelling. The funny thing is, we have all of this help with a simple word processing program called WORD. You should really look into getting this on Ebay instead of movies. IdiotofNatetof77" (I of course changed the persons user name to protect his embarassing identity and idiotic comments. lol) Um if anyone can make sense of this rambling comment by this person youd see that first of all I do not have any of the problems this person describes. Also this person forgets to mention how my reviews have gotten VH ratings from several well known members of the site including Jill Murphy, and others. Now can you spot the other rambling errors by this idiot? "You should really look into gettting this on Ebay instead of movies". That in itself is a sentence fragment, and it seems this person has a case of short term memory when I said in the first paragraph that I got this movie on EBAY. LOL He also misspelled systematic and made a new word systemic I should further add that this person made up a fake account on the same day, I gave one of his poor reviews a Sh and then used the fake account to give me a SH, and impersonating a woman no less and this is a person who constantly uses CAPS LIKE THIS IN HIS REVIEW WHICH makes very poor and hard to read. Ill be adding more info about this harasser and his fake account in the near future. In fact the web site knows he has a fake account and hasn't terminated his account, but enough of this drunken bozo. Anyhow, "Barbarella" is a great movie that deserves to be seen, it's a cult classic and it's one of the best scifi B movies that came out in the late 60's, early 70's.
