Advantages: Stone is great
Disadvantages: Not sexy enough
The first Basic Instinct was a sexy, smart, and slick thriller that was released in 1992, making a star out of gorgeous lead Sharon Stone. Paired with brilliant performer Michael Douglas, they made one of the best erotic thrillers of all time, although sadly the genre has fallen into disrepute in recent years, and the hugely awaited sequel, Basic Instinct 2, just couldn't cut it in the modern cinematic world.
The film has Stone returning as Catherine Tramell, and when she's hauled in by the police on a possible drug charge, she's forced to go under psychiatric evaluation with Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey), who, much like Michael Douglas's poilice officer character in the first film, she manages to wrap around her little finger and essentially carry in her thrawl as she prepares to go on another torrent of murder and mayhem.
Despite rumours that Stone had let herself go, or that she was simply too old for the role, she actually is the least of things to worry about here. The problem is that it's just a rather limp erotic thriller with a plot that's not only ludicrous and laughably bad, but also derived largely from the original film. It's also a problem that the erotic thriller is largely passe in Hollywood now; there isn't too much of an audience for them anymore, and they're generally relegated to a late night slot on the duldrums of some low-viewership Sky channel.
The film courted controversy just like the original film; but it doesn't earn it through titillation and entertainment; it's more a film you laugh at than you are genuinely aroused by, despite Stone looking fantastic for her age and David Morrissey delivering a decent performance even if he lacks the steely star power of Michael Douglas.
Summary: A daft follow up
