Michael Keaton returns as the Caped Crusader, but where the original movie was held together by the brilliant one villain/one hero plot, 'Batman Returns' is split by the presence of too many bad guys. Batman faces the triple wrath of The Penguin (DeVito), backed by general sleazeball Max Shreck (Walken), and Catwoman (Pfieffer). While The Penguin and Shreck devise a plan to get The Penguin voted in as Mayor of Gotham, Catwoman dances to her own tune, generally wreaking havoc. The ironic twist to all this being that by day Batman and Catwoman's alter egos are falling for each other. The Penguin's plot, although larger, is pretty bland, the real enjoyment coming from the interaction between Pfieffer and Keaton. From the moment she handsprings her way up to Batman and growls, 'Meeoww' the chemistry is electric. Tim Burton's vision is even bleaker than before, with the tale of childhood loss and rejection spreading into The Penguin's history, but where The Joker was fun in his evil lunacy, The Penguin is simply grotesque and Schreck pointless.
