Advantages: Storyline, Involving
Disadvantages: Quite violent
This film is not for the faint hearted!
This is a Japanese film released in 2000. It is quite original in its storyline and it doesn't fail to shock you.
I first watched this film when I was a teenager and thought it was excellent. Having watched it many times since I still think this way. Whilst the idea in the film is quite grotesque and shocking, and there is a great deal of violence and blood there is more to it than that.
The storyline is that of a group of school children who are taken to an island to play a game. The game basically is that they have to kill each other and the one person left standing is the winner. The students are all fitted with explosive neck tags which blow up if you try to run away or are in the wrong area zone. A pretty sick game that is devised by the teacher.
What I love about this film is that despite it being an obvious survival game, where the majority of students, after getting over the initial shock and realisation of what is about to happen, that they have to kill or be killed, that there is a group of others who think differently.
Through the film you get to see the friendships and love that some people have and that instead of giving in, that there are other options available and that perhaps the game could be outdone. It really shows that people don't just have to follow the trend, and encourages people to do what feels right inside.
Summary: What would you do?
