This is Quentin Tarrantino's favourite film since he began directing, and we watched it on that basis. It's a Japanese film, so you'll be reading subtitles which is bound to bother some. Personally I find world cinema, particularly Japanese and French films, are a nice break from the predictable, safe world of Hollywood.

The film is about a naughty school class that is selected to take part in the Battle Royale. The BR is a game on an island where it's everyone for themselves. The aim is to kill everyone else, using a variety of weapons, and the final person will survive and be released.

There are lots of films like this out there, and most of them are crap, but this is really good because it's authentic and never seems fake. Yes there's corny music and OTT special effects to do with blood, but the emotion of the characters and the setting give it a sense of realism that others don't have.

The acting is solid, the special effects and gore are fun, and overall this is an excellent original film worth watching.
