Advantages: A film which embraces awhole range of issues and emotions.
Disadvantages: Suited more for women, so not for everyone.
To say that this film is a bit of a tear-jerker is an understatement. It's a tale of life long friendship, betrayal, jealousy, life and loss and it's impossible but to be caught up in the lives of two friends CC i.e Cecilia ( played by Bette Midler as the adult CC and Mayim Bialik as the young CC ) and Hilary ( played by Barbara Hersey as the adult Hilary and Marcie Leeds as the young Hilary. )
They meet at the age of 11 under the broadwalk in Atlantic City. We soon learn that CC is a child performer hiding from her pushy-mother there and Hilary is lost. This is where the two unlikely friends, from very different worlds, become friends and their friendship grows and grows. As a viewer, we learn all this as an adult CC is driving to see Hilary and is reminiscing about their childhood, their lives and their friendship. She remembers their young adult lives and their struggles with study for Hilary ( as she works towards becoming a lawyer ) and her struggle to make it as a singer/performer. It is when Hilary's struggles become too much that she turns up to stay with CC that their friendship goes a bit pearshaped. However, it's not until their lives cross again years later when CC is finally successful, whist Hilary has given up her career plans to become a successful lawyer, does their friendship hit rock bottom successful. Things are said in the heat of the moment and their friendship seems doomed. However, when their marriages for one reason or another break down, they come together again and iron out their friendship issues and when Hilary reveals that she is pregnant, their friendship goes from strength to strength. However, tragedy strikes and Victoria ( Hilary's daughter ) and CC must mourn and prepare for a new life without Hilary.
I'd recommend this film for teens and upwards and admit that it would probably suit female audiences more than male audiences. It's a true girly film about friendship that spans a life time and beyond, dealing with issues in a way that will hit a chord with women more so than men. It has fun and laughter, but tragedy and drama all in one film which really is a rollercoaster of emotions !! And if all that didn't have you weeping, then the "Wind beneath my wings" lyrics will !!
Summary: A true girly movie that will tug on the heart srings. An absolute classic.
