Advantages: errr.....none
Disadvantages: bad script, un-original, dull visuals
Before christmas I had the chance to see this film at a pre-screening. It seems that they were taking the film around the UK to drum up some publicity by showing the film and have the director in attendance for an audience Q & A. The film is the first from DNA films which has been given hefty funding from the lottery to make british films. It's just too bad that they didn't spend that money on a decent script in the first place. The director Bill Eagles is a nice enough guy (I've met him) whose previous work is in TV drama such as Peak Practice. However with this film he is unsure with what to do with the film. It tries to be a thriller and a comedy but fails dismally at both. The story follows two women who meet in violent circumstances. They soon get embroiled in a world of crime where they try to make off with a large amount of money. it has some echoes of Thelma and Louise. The problem is that the film features so many cliched characters. There is the criminal businessman who's a hardcase with a legitimate business. Then there's a perverted corrupt policeman and a voilent scottish boyfriend. Some of these characters have linked stories which come together at the end but they're relationships are never touched upon so you're left wondering what everybodys motives are. The humour as well tries to be black but is just plain nasty in it's violence and there is a weak ongoing joke involving a spray-painted dog. The film is set in Scotland and it just looks dull and lifeless. Everything is washed out and murky. This kind of thing has a more TV feel than something to be seen on the big screen. DNA seriously need to look out what they put their money into making as this is another example of what is wrong with the UK film industry at present. Another uninspired crime thriller. From the Q & A session with Bill Eagles I kind of got the feeling that he didn't fully see eye to eye witht the wri
ter/producer so maybe he shouldn't shoulder all the blame.
