Advantages: Feelgood, Nice acting

Disadvantages: Too short

Do you believe that there is only one person on the earth who is your true love/soul mate? Bed Of Roses does. The whole focus of the film is that true love only comes around once in a lifetime and we have to be careful not to miss it.

Christian Slater stars as Lewis Farrell an uncharacteristic romantic, who has been admiring Lisa Walker (Mary Stuart Masterston) from afar. When he decides that he needs to get her attention, he starts sending her magnificent floral arrangements, and she becomes intrigued, especially when her on/off boyfriend Danny (Josh Brolin) tells her he would never do such a thing.

Lisa lives for her job as an investment banker, probably because to date she has had a less than enviable life. As a child she was given barely any love, and as she has grown up, she has found it hard to reciprocate any love she is shown. The saddest thing of all is that she does not even know when her birthday is. (Even though it would be pretty easy to find out!)

Lewis is the opposite of Lisa. An ex stock broker turned florist, who has turned his back on love after he lost his wife and child in childbirth. All of that changes when Lisa walks past his shop.

Lisa approaches Lewis at the shop and enquires about the delivery, but it is not until she wakes one night and sees Lewis outside her window that she realises he is her secret admirer. She waits until the next morning to confront him, and he admits that she sent them as she was crying. (Her father and pet goldfish had died that day).

After Lewis wins her over, Lisa agrees to spend some time with him, and the relationship builds from there, but Lisa is dogged by doubts that she has no room in her life for love, and she feels she has to make up a non existent family to compete with Lewis, until Lewis senses something is wrong and she confesses her secret.

They spend Christmas together, but Lewis? actions distress Lisa and she leaves.

They both have no cho
ice but to get on with their lives. I do not want to spoil the plot anymore, so I will only say watch to see what happens.

On the surface it looks like a very superficial film, but it is quite sophisticated, and very very romantic.

Christian Slater is great as a romantic lead, and he plays it very much the same way he did in Untamed Heart, but better. His chemistry with Stuart Masterston is stronger than that he had with Marisa Tomei.

Written and directed by Michael Goldenburg, the story goes along at an enjoyable pace, with few surprises, and is a true feel good movie, which may have been improved by lengthening it.

I think true hopeless romantics will love this film, but for the more hard hearted of you, this film may just be too much to bear.
