Premium Review Beerfest (DVD): Way too long (305 words)
by - written on 28/10/09 (Very useful, 4 readings)
Rating:

I am a big fan of what I call "arrested development comedies", in which the lead characters, almost always male, revert to a childish stage of idiocy, letting all responsibility and worry go, and just partake in some of the most ridiculous and carefree activities possible. Beerfest is one such film, and although it's far from perfect, and probably not clever enough to carry this premise, there are some good chuckles throughout. The film opens at the funeral of Johann von Wolfhausen (Donald Sutherland), where two of his grandchildren, Jan and Todd Wolfhouse (Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske), realise that they must spread his ashes at Oktoberfest in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Let's Get Sour On Some Krauts! (730 words)

Rating:

When two brothers travel to Munich for Oktoberfest to take their grandfathers ashes to the family resting place they discover a secret drinking tournament. It turns out that the host of this secret tournament is their grandfathers brother but it seems their grandfather wasn't very highly thought of and with accusations of him being a thief and their great grandmother a whore they are sent back to America. Now the Wolfhouse brothers want to get even and set up an American team to compete at the Beerfest the following year. This 2006 release is the latest film to come from the Broken Lizard writing stable. After their previous efforts Super Troopers and Club ...  Read the complete review

I came across Beerfest due to a friend recommending it and had not seen a comedy that had really made me laugh for quite a while. So, when I began to watch this although I remained open minded I wasn't expecting anything that stood out. How wrong I was. Beerfest is the hilarious story of brothers, Todd and Jan Wolfhouse who are given the task of spreading their grandfathers ashes in Munich, Germany by their great grandmother. While attempting this they discover their german cousins the Von Wolfhausens who are not at the best to please them. as the story unravels they are humiliated and sent packing back to the U.S.A where they recruit three friends to make a beer ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Beerfest (DVD): Another comedy gem from the Broken Lizard crew (191 words)
by - written on 12/08/09 (Somewhat useful, 8 readings)
Rating:

The broken lizard crew come up with another comedy gem. After success with "super troopers" and to a lesser extent "club dread", the story follows two brothers who after their grandfather dies, travel to Germany to spread his ashes in the family resting place. Apon arrival they find that the family resting place is actually the location of the beer drinking olympics, and that their grandfather was the outcast of the family and had be shunned by them. The two brothers are upset by this and so challenge the germans to a drinking contest, in which they are beaten badly. After this they return to the USA to train a team and enter the competition next ...  Read the complete review
