Belleville Rendez-Vous (DVD) ... DVD released 26 January, 2004 at Tartan Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / One of the more surprising critical hits of 2003, Sylvain Chomet's Belleville Rendezvous is a French animation that combines occasional beauty and charm with sardonic grotesquerie. People have commented about its bitchy portrait of a USA where everyone is overweight and over-helpful; it is equally nasty about a provincial France, where everything is grey and nothing is convenient. A grandmother and her dog set out to rescue a cyclist who has been kidnapped by the French Mafia and is forced to race endlessly into a receding projected landscape; she is helped by a superannuated trio of female close-harmony chansonniers marooned in American poverty. Nothing in this film is mere chance--almost everything we see turns out to be relevant. There is also little dialogue--most of the time, sound effects and music take its place, from the irritating squeak of a mechanic's breathing to the sublimity of Mozart's "Kyrie" as a storm rages at sea. Belleville Rendezvous uses the best of traditional animation techniques and modern technology to produce something sharply funny and beautifully composed; it is not quite like anything you have seen before. --Roz Kaveney

Premium Review Belleville Rendez-Vous (DVD): The Triplettes of Belleville (403 words)
by - written on 01/12/06 (Useful, 106 readings)
Rating:

My copy of Belleville Rendez - vous came free with a copy of the Times on Saturday. The cover gave away the cartoon style that was to follow. Written & directed by Sylvian Chomet for predominantly French audiences, it goes under the name The Triplets of Belleville for English speaking audiences. The film came in DVD format, rated PG parental guidance for children under 12 years old due probably to the mild nudity & moderate violence as mentioned. It lasts approximately 80 minutes including advertising for the Times and a trailer for the next free gift. ***THE PLOT*** Champion is orphaned at a young age and kept by his grandmother Madame ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Get on yer bike! (702 words)

Rating:

Rendez-vous Sylvian Chomet was already an award-winning comic book writer when he started making his first animated film in 1991. It was called ?The old lady and the pigeons?. Over 10 years later came ?Belleville Rendez-vous?, which, I suppose, could have been called ?The old lady and the fat dog?. But, no ? it?s much more interesting than that! First of all, it looks very different from other animated movies ? it?s not as highly polished as the Pixar movies, and it?s a world and a half away from anything produced by Disney. ?Belleville Rendez-vous? was made by teams based in ...  Read the complete review
