Advantages: A great movie
Disadvantages: DVD extras a little disappointing
Bend it like Beckham was a film that changed the way a lot of girls looked at football. I myself played when I was younger for a girl's team and hated the fact it was all so male orientated. This film was a blast of fresh air.
*+* CAST *+*
Some of the cast include:
Parminder Nagra - Jesminder Kaur Bhamra (Jess)
Keira Knightley - Juliette Paxton (Jules)
Jonathan Rhys Meyers - Joe
Archie Panjabi - Pinky Bhamra
Anupam Kher - Mr Bhamra (Jess' Dad)
Shaznay Lewis (All Saints) - Mel
*+* PLOT *+*
Ok so the story follows Jess (Parminder Nagra) an extremely talented footballer who has to go against her families wishes to fulfil her dream of becoming a professional footballer. After she is spotted in the park by Jules her soon best friend (played by Keira Knightly) she joins a girls football team and manages to keep it a secret from her family using various cover stories. Her potential is clear the minute she touches the ball and she is soon the love interest of her coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) with a trip abroad and some big matches coming up the inevitable is bound to happen her parents are sure to find out but its what makes Jess happy that counts...As the box says "Who wants to cook Aloo Gobi, when you can bend a ball like Beckham?"
*+* DVD EXTRAS *+*
Ok so the piece of paper inside my DVD box says in small print that you can access the special features by pressing the menu button during the film...this doesn't work on my DVD but I have managed to find the directors and co writers audio commentary if you press the audio button but I know this isn't possible on all DVD players. So other than that for extras this is a little poor.
*+* MY OPINIONS *+*
Ok so as a movie it is great it has everything you could want from a movie of this sort and does exactly what it says on the tin. The actors gel well together and the movie has just the right quantities of everything so you are neither left bored or confused. I really like this film I have seen it a couple of times and could watch it again, its one of those films that you could stick on if you just wanted a movie to keep you occupied and doesn't need too much thinking.
Personally I would recommend this to anyone as it is suitable for all but the DVD itself is a little of a let down as I would of liked some extra features.
(By the ay if anyone does find extra features on the DVD let me know)
I would also add that my DVD cover looks nothing like the picture above, it has Parminder and keira on it but a white background with a green and black title.
Summary: Give it a watch you have absolutly nothing to lose
