This is a wonderful film about a sport that I'm not really that interested in, football, at least it was womens football but really it is about cultural differences and is one of those reallt successful British films that comes along every so often.
The star of the film is Parminder Nagra as Jess a football mad Indian girl who has a crush, along with her best friend Jules (Kiera Knightly) on David Beckham, and both have dreams about being professional players themselves. The problem for Jess is that her strict family are against her passion for football and want her to focus on her educational studies.
This is one of those feel good comedies that has been done before but this one does it with real style and the ability to combine the cultural differences with some touching moments.
I was very impressed with the performances of both of the two lead characters who bought a certain maturity to their roles that belied their relative lack of experience when the film was made.
It would be wrong to describe this as a chick flick even if it does have a message about strong women standing up for their rights, it is a funny and engaging film and well worth watching.
Summary: Comedy film.
