Bend it like Beckham is one of those great little British comedies that serves to highlight the diverse cultural mix of this land and to be able to find humour in the different cultures that exist within its borders. There have been a number of films that have focused on the cultural difficulties second and third generation Asians have in balancing the British culture they have been raised in with the culture and expectations of their parents.

In this film it is Jess Bhamra played by Parminder Nagra who is forced to disobey her families wishes as she seeks to pursue her dream of being a professional footballer, a passion she shares with her best friend Jules a white girl played by Keira Knightly who is excellent in this film and puts in a strong performance.

Jess is of Sikh extract and her family are very strict and opposed to her western ways, they want her to study law at university rather than playing football however against their wishes she signs up for Hounslow Harriers a local team.

This is an enjoyable light hearted film with some great acting performances in it, I found that the time flew by when I watched it again recently and it still felt as fresh and as relevant as the first time that I watched it.

Summary: British comedy
