Advantages: Very funny and some good sub plots

Disadvantages: Ran out of ideas towards the end

Benidorm, especially in series 1, is one of those TV comedies that cannot fail to bring a smile to your face as it instantly reminds you of good times or sends your mind to the beach and fills you with excitement for the next possible holiday around the corner. There are no shortage of laughs here too as this brilliantly written first series sets the scene for what has ultimately been fairly disappointing follow ups in series 2 and last night's one off special.

The setting for this show is quite obviously Benidorm and from the very first episode it is clear that the production team have got the right mix of holiday makers in there and this spawned some really funny moments that had my husband and I in stitches. I have actually stayed in the holiday where the show is set and this again brought back happy memories and thoughts of next time. I think this is the aim of the show in my opinion as well as making people laugh where possible.

Thrown into the mix are a 30+ year old man with his almost senile mother, a gay couple, an elderly couple who have just sex as their sole topic of conversation, a sexy pool attendant who has his fair share of ladies falling at his feet and a family of loud misfits to name but a few. These people interact with each other in fresh new ways that I had not seen very often in this first series. Like I said earlier, the ideas for this seem to run dry in later episodes but not in this series 1 DVD.

The laughs come thick and fast in this series and I really enjoyed seeing how the diverse characters took to their holiday. The sheer shock on the faces of the people there when one man suggested leaving the hotel pool and heading to the beach was priceless comedy for me and something I can relate to with my older family members.

I like the kind of serious side that enters the show from time to time with real family and emotional issues entering the plot at the right moments whilst being entirely believable and still funny when appropriate. This is again something that seems lost in more recent episodes to this series.

Overall, I would highly recommend this DVD but just stick to this series as it is only downhill from here.

Summary: Defintely the best series of the show
