Beowulf [2007] (DVD) ... Hopkins ... / DVD released 17 March, 2008 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalised by Crispin Glover, River's Edge), Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother, played by Angelina Jolie... and as Jolie's pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we're leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters' eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequences feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesqueness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights--particularly Grendel's initial assault on the celebration hut--pop with lushly animated gore and violence. Also featuring the CGI-muffled talents of Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Robin Wright Penn (The Princess Bride), and John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons). --Bret Fetzer

... (Beowulf and Grendel) has my attention unequivocally. Also, it boasts a pretty stellar cast. The film depicts the not-so-noble warrior Beowolf (Ray Winstone), who decides to help the Danes when their kingdom is attacked by a hulking, dragon-like monster named Grendel. He is a bawdy character who is strong and fast, but he's also got that attribute that causes so many heroes to fall - excessive hubris, and he pays for this when, after fighting Grendel, meets his mother (Angelina Jolie, who was motion captured for the part...more

Premium Review Beowulf [2007] (DVD): Animation at its best! (786 words)

Ok so I went to go and see Beowulf at the cinema purely because I was intrigued that it was a film based on a poem. I personally had never heard of it but my friend had and said she couldn't really see how they could make a film out of it. I know now that there are quite a few adaptations but I had never seen them. So I read the poem before going to see the film which got me confused but then when I watched the film I loved it and found it to be so much fun to watch and here is why. Ok so the story is that there is a monster called Grendel who seems to terrorise a community of people. The king is fed up with this and calls on hero Beowulf to rid the place ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Beware of Beowulf (1032 words)

In November 2007 director Robert Zemeckis brought us the hit film that is 'Beowulf'. It is based on the Old English epic poem of the same name and was captured in a similar way as was utilised by Zemeckis in his 2004 film 'The Polar Express'. I'm not usually a massive fan of motion capture films, but as soon as I saw the trailer for this film I just knew that I had to see it. 'Beowulf' really captured my imagination and as I prepared to view it I think that to say I was excited would be a gross understatement. Cast in this film are people such as John Malkovich, Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, and even Anthony Hopkins. With this being a motion picture, none ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review My Name is Beowulf, and I have come to write a review! (192 words)

The film is the first of its kind. The animation is so inch perfect and flawless the actors keep the actual features, whilst allowing the director to put their bodies into situations that would not normally be possible. The camera angles, the lighting, the sounds, the effects, they all add up to make this film an edge of your seat kind of film. I never watch animations, espeically not fantasy/action animations, however Beowulf, that I decided I would watch with a friend, has changed my opinion of animation for ever. (Although I dont think any film will match up to it any time soon!) The story line follows a brave warrior by the name of Beowulf, who travels ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Beowulf [2007] (DVD): I am Beowulf! Why should I care? (763 words)

Beowulf has come to kill a "monstah" and release a Kingdom from it's curse. He does this not for gold, but for glory and may the Gods help anyone who gets in his way. His desire to become a Legend in the eyes of men has become all consuming and when faced with the dangerous offer of immortality his only question is, "Where do I sign?" Lets start off by saying this is one weird arsed attempt of a movie. Never before have a seen a film were the monsters are more realistic than the actors but "Beowulf" intentionally goes for this by adopting a motion capture style. It is all a bit odd as actors you know such as Anthony Hopkins as ...  Read the complete review
