Beverly Hills Cop (DVD) ... DVD released 13 May, 2002 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / While its sequels were formulaic and safe, the first Beverly Hills Cop set out to explore some uncharted territory and succeeded. A blend of violent action picture and sharp comedy, the film has an excellent director, Martin Brest (Scent of a Woman), who finds some original perspectives on stock scenes (highway chases, police rousts) and hits a gleeful note with Murphy while skewering LA culture. Good support from Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as local cops not used to doing things the Detroit way (Murphy's character hails from the Motor City). Paul Reiser has a funny, brief moment at the beginning and Bronson Pinchot makes an hilarious impression in a great, never-to-be-duplicated scene with the star. --Tom Keogh

... very poor (stiff) performance from Steven Berkoff. Murphy's facial movements and laugh makes this film extremely memorable. The cast put together worked great for the film. The scripted humour is way above par. It is Murphy's confidence and swagger in his character that makes you want to watch him more. The film is about a Detroit Cop called 'Axel Foley' (Eddie Murphy). A friend of his was killed on a visit from Beverly Hills by professional hitmen of the company he worked for. Axel asks for a vacation, and on it ...more

Premium Review Beverly Hills Cop (DVD): The Heat Is On (355 words)

'Beverley Hills Cop' is one of those films from the 1980s that they just don't make any more! You can put it in the same grouping as 'Lethal Weapon', 'Back to the Future' and most Arnie films and entitle it 'Effortless Entertainment'. Because it's just so easy to watch. The whole combination of characterisation, acting and soundtrack works very well to create one of the most familiar films of the 80s. It's no wonder they made 2 sequels. Director Martin Brest's 'Beverley Hills Cop' stars Eddie Murphy as the inimitable Axel Foley, a streetwise Detroit cop who tracks his best friend's murderer to Beverley Hills. Hampered by the local police but undeterred, Foley ...  Read the complete review

Once upon a time there was a loud mouth fast talking comedian known as Eddie Murphy. In recent years he's been replaced by a comedian hell bent on churning out money spinning family comedies with none of the real spark shown in his earlier years. We will always associate De Niro with Raging Bull, Pacino with Scarface. It's the same with Murphy as Axel Foley. Beverly Hills Cop isn't necessarily the greatest film on this earth but it's a template for the genre and one that other people have tried to replicate since. Axel Foley is a street-smart cop in Detroit. We join him in the middle of an undercover operation that goes wrong and ends up with a ...  Read the complete review

Eddie Murphy rose to stardom as Axel Foley, a streetwise and brash young Detroit cop in this comic blockbuster that combined frenetic action, hysterical rough-edged comedy, and a chart-topping rock & roll soundtrack...you know...the one everyone has as their mobile phone ringtone... "When his best friend is murdered, Axel heads off to Beverly Hills in an effort to track down the killer. The resulting culture shock is only one of his difficulties: Often operating just outside the law in his determination to capture the murderer, he finds himself repeatedly clashing with the local authorities as well as his supervisor back home. With the help of Beverly ...  Read the complete review
