Big Daddy is an American based comedy which was directed by Dennis Dugan & starring Adam Sandler & Joey Lauren Adams, amongst others.
The plot of the film follows Sonny Koufax (Sandler) who is a layabout who lives off a large payout he received several years ago after being hit by a car. He appears to be a lazy slob on the surface and this makes him seem a little stupid also but he has actually got a law degree but is lacking the effort and motivation to take the bar exam and make something of his life.
He has quite a few friends who he has met through being lazy or just from when he was studying for his exam and he does actually have a part time job where he works collecting toll fees and letting vehicles through to the toll bridge.
He has realised that he is one of the only one of his friends who is not moving forward with his life as he has no relationship, no children and no real job. He does briefly have a girlfriend near the start of the film but she soon gets sick of the way he behaves and does a flit near the start of the film.
While hanging around his apartment one day there is a knock on the door and somebody has dropped off a child with a note stating that he is the son of Sonny's friend & roommate, Kevin, who has just left to go on a trip to China and doesn't want to come back. Sonny contacts Kevin who tells him to go to social services and it initially appears that Sonny is going to do this but then he realises that he likes the company of the child and he tries to keep him but of course all does not go to plan and this is what the majority of the film is based around.
Adam Sandler is very funny in this film and he works extremely well with Kevin's son, Julian, and I think that they make a very comic duo when they are teaching each other new tricks or deciding what they're going to do for the day etc.
I really enjoyed this storyline and it's one that I've actually watched a couple of times now. I love Adam Sandler in most films and his character does not disappoint in this one as he strives to become a father figure to Julian whilst letting him make lots of decisions in life and they get a really strong bond which is one that seems unlikely to be broken. It's a steep learning curve when you suddenly have a small child on your hands and Sonny shows this throughout the film and we really get to see him muddling through and trying to do the best that he can with some very comical affects.
The film runs for 89 minutes and this is just the perfect amount of time to make it short enough to enjoy in the afternoon when I only want to kill a little time between programmes or chores and it's available from Amazon.co.uk for just £2.98 which is an absolute bargain.
This film is very fun and it's one that I would recommend, Sandler makes it what it is and he's supported by a very good cast who play his family and friends. The ending is very ncie and one that makes me feel a little soppy everytime I see it! I am rating this film 5/5 as I adore watching it and it's a real feel good movie time and time again.
Summary: A fantastic comical film starring Adam Sandler as he deals with 'parenthood'.
