Advantages: THE PREMISE
Disadvantages: ROMANTIC ELEMENT TO FILM
BIG is a comedy movie from the eighties.
The film centres around a boy named Josh who after being humiliated by a girl and not being big enough to go on the fairground rides goes to a statue and wishes he was big. The next day he wakes up and is an adult played by Tom Hanks.
Only Josh's best friend now knows that he is an adult and manages to get him a job in a toy store. Because of his childlike nature Josh's boss is impressed and gives him a promotion. From here he meets Susan Laurence played by Elizabeth Perkins and the two start a relationship even though she has a husband. As time goes by though Josh wants to be a child again though doesn't know if he ever will return to his normal state.
The premise of this film is very original and is very enjoyable. There are many memorable scenes includng Josh and his boss playing music on the giant piano with their feet. The movie never drags and holds your attention throughout. There is some good humour though the moral of the film is better that you should never lose your childhood innocence. I felt the romantic scenes didn't work in the film, though they didn't ruin it.
Tom Hanks is superb as older Josh and excels with his childlike enthusiasm. The supporting cast are terrific. The ending fits the tone of the movie.
Lasting 104 minutes, with a PG viewing certificate this is a film with a great story.
