It's all in the reflexes (Big Trouble In Little China (DVD))

Advantages: An absolutely excellent film Disadvantages: None whatsoever
Big Trouble in Little China is without a doubt one of my favourite films of all time.Kurt Russell is on truly brilliant form as the wise cracking truck driver, Jack Burton, and John Carpenter not only provides solid direction but an excellent soundtrack as well.It is hard to place this film into one genre - it is basically an action movie but Jack Burton's constant, hilarious, throw away catchprases soon add a classic element of comedy to the film.It starts with Jack Burton meeting up with his friend Weng in San Francisco Chinatown and agreeing to accompany him to the airport, where Weng has arranged to meet his green-eyed girlfrend, Mao Yin, from China. When Jack and Weng get there she is captured by a local gang, the Lords of Death, and taken to the domain of David Lo Pan - who, unfortunately for Jack and Weng, is an ancient and very evil Chinese sorcerer that just happens to be looking for a Chinese girl (namely Mao Yin) with green eyes to sacrifice to the Gods in return for becoming flesh once again. What then ensues is an entertaining and often funny battle between good and evil, set in and around the atmospheric Chinatown streets with many unsavoury characters (notably Lo Pan's henchmen, the Storms) emerging out of the woodwork. The plot does sound a little immature, granted, but upon viewing the film proves to be very entertaining, with brilliant performances from all of the leads but, of course, the best performance of all is that of John Carpenter, who made this film the absolute classic it is.
